“What is wrong with these people? Don’t they know what we were fighting for?” Amaia said as soon as the other vampires were out of sight.
“People like to have direction.” Michael shut the door behind Meg and Liam when they entered. “As much as people hated Zenas’s clan, there must have been some sort of comfort in knowing, understanding the way the world worked. Now they’re looking for someone to lead the vampire world.”
“Well, they’ll have to find what they’re looking for somewhere else. Maybe they should become religious.” Amaia saw many parallels between what Michael said and the role religion played in the lives of mortals.
“Perhaps.”
“You’re the only religious vampire I’ve ever met,” Liam said. “I wouldn’t hold out hope of a mass conversion.”
“It doesn’t matter anyway.” Michael turned his attention from Liam to Amaia. “We’ll be leaving tomorrow.”
“Really? Is your surprise ready?” All other thoughts fled Amaia’s mind. Excitement stirred in her stomach. She couldn’t wait to leave this place behind with its lingering memories of war.
“Yes. It’s why Liam and I stayed away earlier.”
“So where are we going?”
“You won’t find out until tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Because, my surprise, my rules. Tomorrow will be a better time for you to see it. There’s a storm coming in tonight, so I thought we’d stay here to wait it out.”
Meg giggled, which had Amaia biting her cheeks to keep from laughing. “Very well, but I don’t want to be bothered by anyone anymore.”
“And you won’t. Where we’re going, they won’t follow.”
Michael’s promise intrigued her. “And we’re all going together?” Amaia looked to Liam for an answer.
“Yes, Meg and I will be coming along. You two don’t irritate me as much as most.”
“Aww, Liam, that’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me.” Amaia placed a peck on his cheek.
“Will we be able to bring anything with us?” Meg’s voice longed for all the pretty things she’d bought in town. It’d be a shame to have to leave them behind.
“You can bring everything.”
“Wonderful!” Meg flung her arms around Liam’s neck.
A few drops of rain landed on the roof, their muted sound the herald of more to come. “I think it’s best we go back to our room.” Liam swept Meg up into his arms and winked at Amaia.
As soon as the door shut behind them, Michael took Amaia’s hand. “Do you fancy a walk in the rain?” And Amaia couldn’t hold in her laughter any longer.
Chapter 43
Michael walked hand in hand with Amaia to the docks. Meg and Liam followed close behind. While Amaia and Meg had been off having fun together, he and Liam had made a purchase. He finally had a worthy surprise for his bride.
The ship came into view. She wasn’t as large or grand as the ones he’d owned as a mortal, but he didn’t need cargo space. She’d fly across the sea if manned correctly. They wouldn’t need a crew. With Meg and Liam, they’d be able to manage just fine. Their vampire speed and reflexes would keep the rigging in fine order even in a storm. As soon as Michael had seen her, he’d known she was the one. The owner hadn’t been looking to sell, but he and Liam had persuaded him, he with money and Liam with a bit of intimidation.
Michael stepped up to the gangplank and gave a sweeping bow, gesturing for Amaia to precede him. “Here’s your ship, Captain.”
Amaia giggled. It’d been so long since he’d heard that sound, and now he had heard it twice in the space of twenty-four hours. “Really?”
“Yes. She’s ours. Did you see the name?” Michael pointed to where he’d painted the name on the stern the previous day.
Amaia’s eyes widened. “Jocelyn.”
“Yes. It seemed appropriate.”
“Michael, I don’t know what to say.”
Her eyes were so full of love for him that he didn’t know what to say either. Instead, he took her lips in a kiss. When it deepened, he broke away and hoisted her into his arms like a bride. He carried her onboard and didn’t set her down until they were behind the wheel. Meg and Liam followed but stayed on the opposite end of the ship, giving them privacy.
Michael came behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders. He leaned down to whisper in her ear, “So where to, Captain?”
Amaia shook her head. “She’s yours to captain. It’s where you belong.”
“So if I’m the captain, what are you?”
She thought for a moment before brightening. “The sails.”
“Then what?”
“The wind. You’ve always been the wind: subtle, pushing me this way and that. I always knew you’d either whip my heart to pieces or take me everywhere I ever wanted to go, depending on how I set my sail.”
“Should we set the sails then?”
“Aye.”
“And where is it you want to go?”
He wrapped his arms around her waist and held her to him. “Wherever you take me.”
He knew they’d settle in Paris eventually. They had dreamed too long of a permanent home within site of the rose of Notre Dame. But there was no hurry. They had eternity, and there were many ports between them and France.
