Acknowledgments
Writing Truth Beat brought back vivid memories of the parish where I was reared. Like so many Catholic churches, St. Bernard’s is closed now, to the great sadness of the many people for whom it was a beloved home. Though I parted ways with Catholicism long before St. Bernard’s giant oak doors were bolted shut in 2010, I could not have written this book had I not spent so many Sundays sitting in its soaring sanctuary. I am grateful to the teaching nuns of St. Bernard’s—members of the order of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary—for their diligent instruction, especially in matters grammatical.
Many thanks to my amazing readers—Richard Bilodeau, Ann Bingham, Shonna Milliken Humphrey and Travis James Humphrey—for their insightful feedback. The interplay among four such brilliant individuals on critique night was as precious to me as their comments.
I thank my colleagues at the Maine Crime Writers blog for welcoming me into the local crime-writing fold. I would be lost without Donna Jones, webmistress extraordinaire. I am grateful for the guidance of the amazing Elizabeth Peavey, who helped me realize it would be fun to stand up in front of a room full of strangers and talk about Joe Gale. I cannot begin to list the ways my colleagues David Currier, Carol Warren, Andrea Cesario and Kristine Hedtler support my writing life.
My agent Marlene Stringer at The Stringer Literary Agency consistently goes above and beyond on my behalf. I also thank my terrific editor Deborah Nemeth and the whole team at Carina Press for helping to make my work the best it can be.
I thank my parents, who may not always have known what to do with their bookworm daughter, but loved and supported her every day.
I am truly blessed by Diane Kenty’s presence in my life. Her constancy and love makes everything possible.
