      las puertas del paraíso:

      sombras crepusculares

      y no mires atrás.

      THE KING OF PARKS

What’s a guy like you doing here?

      Are you plotting a crime?

Did you get it in your head to go into that house

      silently, forcing open a window

      or via the kitchen door?

You’re not the king of parks and gardens anymore,

your face is in the police archives

and just pushing a button on the computer spits out

      a photo of you, front

      and profile.

You’re not the king of parks anymore, listen up, a button

and you fall between the teeth of the machine, your mug

in the eyes of the world, sergeants of criminal and

forensic squads, nurses and photographers, expert medical

      examiners and broad shoulders guarding

      the gates of paradise:

      twilight shadows

that will try to avert a new fall. Shadows that say:

stay out of trouble, sonofabitch, keep walking straight under the floodlights

      and don’t look back.

      TWILIGHT IN BARCELONA

What can be said about the drowning Barcelona twilights. Remember

The magnetic Barcelona twilights are like that, like Satie’s eyes and

Long hair, like Satie’s hands and like Rusiñol’s affection.

Twilights inhabited by supreme silhouettes, magnificence

Of the sun and the sea over these hanging or subterranean abodes

Built for love. City of Sara Gibert and Lola Paniagua,

City of slipstreams and completely gratuitous secrets.

      City of genuflections and rope.

      PALINGENESIA

Nieve, dijo.

No tiembles, respondí, no ocurrirá nada, la pesadilla, aunque cercana,

      Ha pasado sin apenas tocarnos.

      PALINGENESIS

I was chatting with Archibald MacLeish in “Los Marinos” bar

In Barceloneta when I saw her appear, a plaster statue

Walking arduously over the cobblestones. My friend

Saw, too, and sent a waiter to fetch her. For the first

Few minutes she didn’t say a word. MacLeish ordered consommé and

Shellfish tapas, pan de payés with tomato and oil, and San Miguel beer.

I settled for a chamomile infusion and slices of

Wheat bread. I should care for myself, I said. Then she decided to speak:

The barbarians are coming, she whispered melodiously, a deformed mass,

Pregnant with howls and oaths, a long night tossed up

To reveal the marriage of muscles and fat. Then

Her voice shut off and she set about devouring dishes.

A hungry and beautiful woman, said MacLeish, an irresistible temptation

For two poets, though from different languages, still from the same indomitable

New world. I said he was right without getting all of his words

And closed my eyes. When I woke MacLeish had gone. The statue

Was there in the street, her leftovers scattered on the irregular

Sidewalk and old cobblestones. The sky, hours before blue, had turned

Black as insurmountable rancor. It’s going to rain, said a barefoot

Little boy, shivering for no apparent reason. We stared at each other a while:

With his finger he gestured to pieces of plaster on the ground. Snow, he said.

Don’t shiver, I responded, nothing’s going to happen, the nightmare, though close,

      Has passed, barely touching us.

      DEVOCIÓN DE ROBERTO BOLAÑO

A finales de 1992 él estaba muy enfermo

y se había separado de su mujer.

      Ésa era la puta verdad:

      estaba solo y jodido

y tantas otras cosas buenas y dignas

Toward the end of 1992 he was very sick

and had separated from his wife.

      That was the goddamn truth:

      he was alone and fucked

and he tended to think there was little time left.

      But dreams, oblivious to sickness,

      showed up every night

with a loyalty that came to surprise him.

Dreams took him to that magical country

he and no one else called Mexico City

      and Lisa and the voice
    of Mario Santiago

      reading a poem

and so many other good things worthy

      of the most ardent praise.

Sick and alone, he would dream

and confront the days that passed inexorably

toward the end of another year.

And from it he gathered a bit of strength and courage.

Mexico, the phosphorescent steps in the night,

      the music playing on corners

where in the past whores would freeze

(in the icy heart of Colonia Guerrero)

and would dole him out the sustenance needed

      to clench his teeth

      and not cry in fear.

      EL REGRESO DE ROBERTO BOLAÑO

      1

      2

      Volví pálido como la luna

      y sin demasiado entusiasmo

a los burdeles de mi patria

      y las putas me sonrieron

      con una calidez inesperada

y una que probablemente no tenía

      30 años

      aunque aparentaba 50

      me sacó a bailar

      una samba o un tango

      juro que no lo recuerdo

en medio de la pista iluminada

por la luna y las estrellas

      3

      Volví ya pacificado

      más bien enfermo

      flaco y sin dinero

      y sin planes para conseguirlo

      sin amigos

      sin una triste pistola

      que me ayudara a abrir

      algunas puertas

      y cuando todo parecía llevarme

      al lógico desastre final

aparecieron las putas y los burdeles

      las canciones que bailaban

      los viejos macrós

      y todo volvió a brillar

      ROBERTO BOLAÑO’S RETURN

      1

I went back to Chile’s whores and there wasn’t a bordello

that didn’t receive me like a son

like the brother returning in a veil of mist

      and I heard delightful music

music filled with guitar and piano and congas

      good for dancing

      good for letting yourself go

and bouncing from table to table

      from couple to couple

      greeting all who were present

      giving everyone a smile

      giving everyone a word

      of recognition

      2

I went back pale as the moon

      and without much enthusiasm

      for my homeland’s bordellos

and the whores smiled at me

      with an unexpected warmth

      and one who probably wasn’t

      even 30

      though she looked 50

      grabbed me to dance

      a samba or tango

      I swear I don’t remember

in the middle of the dance floor lit

by the moon and the stars

      3

      I went back pacified

      rather sick

      thin and without money

and without any plans to acquire it

      without friends

      without even a lousy gun

that might help me to open

      a few doors

and when everything seemed to be sweeping me

      toward the logical final disaster

      the whores and bordellos appeared

      the songs the old

      pimps danced to

      and everything shined again

      THE GREEK

We saw a brown-skinned woman constructing the cliff.

Just for a second, as if speared by the sun. Like

The wounded eyelids of the god, our infinite beach’s

Premeditated child. The Greek, the Greek,

Repeated the Mediterranean whores, the magisterial

Breeze: the one directing itself, like a phalanx

Of marble statues, streaked with blood and volition,

Like a bright diabolical plan suspended in the sky

And in your eyes. Renegade of cities and of the Republic,

When I think that everything’s lost, I’ll trust in your eyes.

When compassionate defeat convinces us how useless it is

To keep on fighting, I’ll trust in your eyes.

      a sobrevivir

      THE YEARS

I still think I see him, face scarred by fire

      on the horizon

      A brave and beautiful boy

      A Latin American poet

A loser totally unconcerned with money

A child of the middle class

A reader of Rimbaud and Oquendo de Amat

A reader of Cardenal and Nicanor Parra

      A reader of Enrique Lihn

A guy who falls madly in love

and after two years is alone

      but thinks it can’t be

it’s impossible not to end up together

      with her again

      A vagabond

      A wrinkled, worn-out passport and a dream

      spanning border posts

buried in the slime of his own nightmare

      A seasonal worker

      A rustic saint

A Latin American poet far from the poets

      of Latin America

A guy who fucks and loves and experiences good and bad

      adventures, further and further away

      from where he started

      A wind-beaten body

A tale and a history nearly all have forgotten

A stubborn guy probably of Indian

      Creole and Galician blood

A statue that sometimes dreams of finding

love again at some unexpected and terrible moment

      A reader of poetry

      A foreigner in Europe

A man who’s losing his hair and his teeth

      but not his courage

As if courage were worth something

As if courage would give him back

      those far-off Mexican days

      lost youth and love

(Fine, he said, let’s say I’m okay with losing Mexico and youth

      but never love)

A guy with a strange predisposition

      to survive

A Latin American poet who when night falls

sprawls out on his straw mattress and dreams

      A marvelous dream

      spanning countries and years

      A marvelous dream

      spanning sickness and absences

      REENCUENTRO
