      Note from the author’s heirs

We decided to publish The Unknown University because of the profound respect we had for Roberto’s love of his poetry, and because we found, when organizing his archives, that this was a finished volume—with an index and an explanatory note, with dates and origins for the poems—prepared for publication by Roberto.

The present edition corresponds exactly to the manuscript we found (with only a few minimal corrections taken off of his computer). Roberto himself dates it to 1993. They were years of work and struggle, but above all years of work.

      MY LITERARY CAREER

Rejections from Anagrama, Grijalbo, Planeta, certainly also from Alfaguara,

Mondadori. A no from Muchnik, Seix Barral, Destino... All the publishers... All the readers

      All the sales managers...

Under the bridge, while it rains, a golden opportunity

to take a look at myself:

like a snake in the North Pole, but writing.

Writing poetry in the land of idiots.

Writing with my son on my knee.

      Writing until night falls

with the thunder of a thousand demons.

The demons who will carry me to hell,

      but writing.

      October 1990

      THE UNKNOWN

      UNIVERSITY

      Primera parte

      LA NOVELA-NIEVE

      Part One

      Combien j’aime

      BAUDELAIRE

      THE SNOW-NOVEL

      Esperas que desaparezca la angustia

Mientras llueve sobre la extraña carretera

      En donde te encuentras

      Lluvia: sólo espero

      Que desaparezca la angustia

Estoy poniéndolo todo de mi parte

You wish the angst would go away

While it rains on the strange road

      Where you find yourself

      Rain: I just wish

      The angst would go away

I’m giving it my best shot

      AMANECER

Estoy solo. No me importa

terminar o no mi poema.

      DAYBREAK

Trust me, I’m in the middle of my room

waiting for rain. I’m alone. I don’t care

if I finish my poem or not. I wait for rain,

drinking coffee and through the window watching a beautiful landscape

of courtyards, with clothes hanging still,

silent marble clothes in the city, where wind

does not exist and far off you only hear the hum

of a color TV, watched by a family

who’s also, at this hour, drinking coffee together around

a table: trust me: the yellow plastic tables

unfold into the horizon and beyond:

into the suburbs where they’re building

apartments, and a boy of 16 atop a stack

of red bricks contemplates the machines’ movement.

The sky in the boy’s hour is an enormous

hollow screw the breeze plays with. And the boy

plays with ideas. With ideas and with frozen scenes.

Inertia is a heavy transparent mist

      emerging from his eyes.

Trust me: it isn’t love that’s drawing near

but beauty with its stole of dead dawns.

      LA NOVELA-NIEVE

Mis trabajos literarios 10 abril 1980. Obsesionado

      THE SNOW-NOVEL

My literary work April 10, 1980. Obsessed

with legs in bedrooms where everything is feminine

even me, murdering a sepulchral air of mummified

gumshoes. No writing in the cadence of my days

without money, or love, or glances; just secrets

dark bedrooms where I am the silk stocking

surrounded by canaries and labrys. Even so

when I can talk I say: write amusing things

stuff that will interest people. Abstract pianos

in silence’s ambushes, my own muteness

that envelopes the writing. Maybe I’m just blind,

arriving at a terminal where “my talent”

can be expressed by combustible cracks

my own neck in the snow-novel.

      THIS IS THE HONEST TRUTH

I grew up alongside puritan revolutionaries

I’ve been criticized advised energized by heroes

      of lyric poetry

      and the teeter-totter of death.

What I’m trying to say is my lyricism is different

(that’s all there is to it, but let me

      add one thing more).

Swimming in the swamps of sentimentality

is, to me, like a mercurial Acapulco

      a fish-blood Acapulco

      an underwater Disneyland

where I’m at peace with myself.

Strange gratuitous occupation To go losing your hair

and your teeth The ancient ways of being educated

Odd complacency (The poet doesn’t wish to be greater

than others) Not wealth or fame or even just

poetry Maybe this is the only way

to avoid fear Settle into fear

      like one inhabiting slowness

      Ghosts we all possess Simply

waiting for someone or something in the ruins

      llegará y no veré.

      WORK

In my line of work, practice develops through cause and effect

of a rhombus always present and in motion.

      A detective’s desperate gaze

      before an extraordinary sunset.

Quick writing quick line across a sweet day that

will arrive, that I won’t see.

But no bridge definitely no bridge or signs

to get out of an illusory labyrinth.

Maybe invisible rhymes and armored rhymes emerging from

child’s play, the certainty that she’s dreaming.

Poetry that might champion my shadow in days to come

when I’ll be just a name and not the man who wandered

with empty pockets, worked in slaughterhouses

on the old and on the new continent.

I seek credibility not durability for the ballads

I composed in honor of very real girls.

And mercy for my years before 26.

At 4 a.m. old photographs of Lisa

between the pages of a science fiction novel.

My nervous system recoils like an angel.

Everything lost in the kingdom of words at

4 a.m.: the voice of the redhead sounds the depths of devotion.

Old photographs, houses in that city

      where we slowly made love.

      Practically a wood
    cut, scenes

in motionless succession, frond in the dunes.

Asleep on the table I say I was a poet,

a little too late, a loved one awakes,

no one has burned the candles of friendship

      tus ojos lentos y verdes

      simplemente no existirán.

      Será como la Antología Griega,

      aún más distante,

      como una playa en invierno

para otro asombro y otra indiferencia.

In a thousand years nothing will be left

of all that’s been written this century.

      They’ll read loose sentences, traces

      of lost women,

      fragments of motionless children,

      your slow green eyes

      simply will not exist.

It will be like the Greek Anthology,

      but even further away,

      like a beach in winter

      for another wonder, another indifference.

Escribe sobre las viudas las abandonadas,

las viejas, las inválidas, las locas.

Detrás de las Grandes Guerras y los Grandes Negocios

que conmueven al mundo están ellas.

Viviendo al día, pidiendo dinero prestado,

      estudiando las pequeñas manchas rojas

      de nuestras ciudades

      de nuestros deportes

      de nuestras canciones.

Write of widows, the abandoned ones,

the elderly, the handicapped, the mad.

Behind the Great Wars and Great Businesses

that move the world — there they are.

Living day to day, borrowing money,

      studying the little red stains

      of our cities

      of our sports
