  Kate stared up at him. ‘No, I won’t—it doesn’t matter in the least, does it?’

  ‘No.’

  ‘Although, of course…’ began Kate.

  Mr Tait-Bouverie kissed her silent. ‘Will you marry me, Kate?’

  ‘Well, yes—of course I will, James.’ She smiled at him. ‘Ought we to sit down and discuss it? The wedding and so on?’

  ‘With all the will in the world, my dearest girl, but first of all…’

  He bent his head to kiss her, and Kate, in a happy world of her own, kissed him back.
