“Irene Jones,” Irene said to the woman as she extended her hand.
“Dr. Isabel Vasquez, Mrs. Jones,” Dr. Vasquez said, shaking her hand.
“What sort of doctor?” Irene asked.
“I’m a surgeon,” Dr. Vasquez answered as she looked around her.
Irene noticed Dr. Vasquez catching Alex’s eye. She seemed to relax a little after she and Alex made eye contact. Dr. Vasquez seemed uncomfortable. She looked at Irene and smiled nervously.
“Have you and, JJ, is it? Been married long? Alex and the guys talk about you a lot,” Dr. Vasquez asked, attempting to make conversation.
“Sweetie, you don’t need to entertain me,” Irene said, tucking her arm in the younger woman’s and pulling her along as they walked toward the group of men. “No, we’ve been married a little over a month now.”
“Really?” Dr. Vasquez asked, surprised.
“Tell me about you. What are you doing here with them? How did you and Alex meet?” Irene asked.
“What made you say that?” Dr. Vasquez asked, smiling shyly.
“I know these men, and they’re hard to resist.”
Irene glanced at the men and lingered on James as he laughed with their boys. James was indeed hard to resist and impossible to say no to. His gentle patience and persistence had taken her out of loneliness and he had given her the adventure she so desperately craved all of her life. The love and passion they shared filled her empty spirit. Life with James had turned Irene’s world into an exciting quest taking her from one voyage to the next. James glanced at her and smiled. Irene warmed because she had never known love and affection the way she had known it with him. She giggled slightly. Retired? I don’t think so. We’ve just started.
“So, tell me how you met.”
“It’s a long story,” Dr. Vasquez said with a smile.
“Well, we’ve got nothing but time.”
