“That is exactly what I wanted you to say – and please, darling, never grow bored with – loving me.”
“How could I be bored with anything that seems to carry me up to the Heaven that we believe in and which makes me feel as if I hold an enchanting angel in my arms.”
He bent over Zia and moved the softness of her hair back from her oval forehead.
“You are very beautiful,” he said, “but so are other women. What is it about you that is so different?”
“Tell me – please tell me what it is.”
“I know the answer. It is because you are so good and I have known few really good women in my life!”
“I am sure – that is not – true, but I want you to think that I am.”
“You are good, as my mother was,” the Marquis said. “Until now I have never found anyone who could ever mean what she meant to me, but now there is you and in many ways you are very like her.”
“I am – thrilled that you – should think – so,” Zia murmured.
“I know, my beautiful little wife, that you are good in your heart and in your soul and that is what I want you to be and nothing shall ever spoil you.”
The Marquis paused before he said in a different tone,
“If any man attempted to do so, I swear I would kill him!”
His voice just seemed to ring out round the room and then he was kissing Zia fiercely, demandingly and possessively.
His lips almost hurt her and yet she was not afraid.
She knew that this feeling of possessiveness was very much part of their love and in fact love was not the soft, gentle sentimental thing she had thought it to be.
It was strong, vibrant, often violent, often disruptive and at the same time invincible and irresistible.
She knew it was love that had made the Marquis strong and clever enough to fight for her and to save her from Proteus.
It was the love that in the future would enable them to battle against any obstacles or difficulties for, of course, there would be some in their lives.
But he would always be the victor, always the conqueror, simply because his love gave him the strength to overcome evil and anything that was wrong or wicked,
The Marquis’s kisses became more demanding and she saw that there was a fire in his eyes.
There was also a fire within him that made her know that, while he worshipped her, he also desired her as a woman.
She could feel the same fire within herself and now it was flickering with the flames.
“I want you! My darling, I want you!” the Marquis sighed,
“I am – yours!” Zia murmured.
“Give me yourself, love me, for only God knows how much I really love you.”
“I – love you – I love – you!”
The words seemed to burn with an intensity within them both.
Then, as the Marquis made Zia his, they were swept together into the burning heart of the sun.

Barbara Cartland, who sadly died in May 2000 at the grand age of ninety eight, remains one of the world’s most famous romantic novelists. With worldwide sales of over one billion, her outstanding 723 books have been translated into thirty six different languages, to be enjoyed by readers of romance globally.
Writing her first book ‘Jigsaw’ at the age of 21, Barbara became an immediate bestseller. Building upon this initial success, she wrote continuously throughout her life, producing bestsellers for an astonishing 76 years. In addition to Barbara Cartland’s legion of fans in the UK and across Europe, her books have always been immensely popular in the USA. In 1976 she achieved the unprecedented feat of having books at numbers 1 & 2 in the prestigious B. Dalton Bookseller bestsellers list.
Although she is often referred to as the ‘Queen of Romance’, Barbara Cartland also wrote several historical biographies, six autobiographies and numerous theatrical plays as well as books on life, love, health and cookery. Becoming one of Britain’s most popular media personalities and dressed in her trademark pink, Barbara spoke on radio and television about social and political issues, as well as making many public appearances.
In 1991 she became a Dame of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to literature and her work for humanitarian and charitable causes.
