Jeanne, who had a good idea why the Duc had married in such haste, did not speak and he went on,

“It’s what everybody’s been wanting for a long time and now there’ll be a deal of excitement when I tells them what’s occurred.”

The satisfaction in Gustave’s voice was unmistakable and Jeanne, taking the note from him, said,

“You can ride back now and tell them up at Montvéal what’s happened.”

      Gustave hesitated and she added,

“If you hurry, you’ll have time to be back here again before they ring for their breakfast. You’ve been married yourself, so you know there’s no need to hurry on the first morning of your honeymoon!”

      Gustave laughed.

Then, as he saw the point of what Jeanne was saying, he said,

“You’re right. I’ll ride back, give them the good news and be back here before you can count the minutes I’ve been away.”

“You flatter yourself if you think that’s what I am going to do.” Jeanne answered.

She would have turned away with the note in her hand if Gustave had not caught hold of her.

“Give us a kiss to celebrate all the excitement there’s going to be when it’s known that Monsieur’s been caught at last?”

“Get away with you!” Jeanne said pushing him off. “You’ve got a wife and three children, so keep your kisses to yourself!”

“You don’t know what you’re missing,” Gustave laughed.

“I’ve a good idea,” Jeanne replied.

She waited until Gustave had mounted his horse and then went upstairs.

She knew better than anybody else what the information she held in her hand would mean to the Duc and Duchesse.

She was woman enough to understand Yursa’s fear that somehow, in some crafty evil way, Madame de Salône would either entice the Duc back into her clutches or destroy her, as she had tried to do and failed.

‘Now they’re free to be happy,’ Jeanne said to herself.

She reached the bedroom door, but there was no sound.

With a smile on her lips, she went and sat down on a chair a little way down the corridor to wait for the bell to ring.

      Inside the room Yursa said,

“I suppose, darling, we should ring for breakfast.”

“I am too happy to eat,” the Duc replied. “I want to stay here all day making love to you and telling you how lucky I am!”

“I should like that too, but I am afraid you might be bored.”

“How could I ever be bored with you?” he asked. “My precious, there are no words to tell you how much I love you or how beautiful you are.”

Yursa put her arm round his neck and drew him a little closer.

The sun was casting a golden light over the whole room and the Duc seeing it glint on her hair thought that she was like the sun itself.

“I love you,” he said. “Why are there no more words in our vocabulary to express our love in?”

“It’s easier to say it in kisses,” Yursa said and lifted her lips to his.

He looked down at her for a long moment and then he said,

“You are right. There is no need for words!”

Then he was kissing her, the sun touched them both, the warmth of it moving from their lips into their hearts.

      They were ONE.
