I need to discover what was glittering before I’m weighed down by the desolate atmosphere of this island—it weighs too heavy for anyone to survive here for long. Hell. It really is Hell. I look around until I spot the sparkling object once again. Bending down, I reach for it, and pulling hard, I retrieve an arrowhead from the lava. It wasn’t fully covered, and having removed it, I realize why. It was buried in a person whose body has been forever preserved by the lava.
What the hell happened in this place?
Holding the arrowhead up, I take a closer look at it. There’s an inscription on it, but I can’t make out what it says. I grasp it in my hand and search for any other clues. On closer inspection, this entire area appears to have been a battle field and not that long ago.
Who fought here? Was Fern among them? I’d like to think I’d sense the presence of my surrogate sister if she was buried under the wasteland this beach has now become. I can’t though. It fills me with hope that maybe she’s still alive somewhere.
Transforming back into a griffon, I clasp the arrowhead tightly between my talons and fly around the island one more time. There’s nothing else here. The place is barren now. I have the only clue I’m going to get—the arrowhead. I just need to find out who it belongs to and discover what they know about this place that feels like Hell on Earth.
