      She knew how she felt.

      But how would he feel?

Hearing his car pull up in the garage, she stood, sat, stood again and crossed to the kitchen bench, not quite knowing what to do with herself.

Should she just tell him straight? They’d always been honest with each other, told each other almost everything, but this…

      Oh boy.

She was still debating when the kitchen door opened and Kirk walked in, using his heel to kick it shut as he looked up to see her. A smile wreathed his face, his eyes warming as they always did when he saw her.

It always made her feel special, loved, as loved as when he did what he always did when he saw her after one or both of them came home from work - he crossed right over to her, leaning down to capture her lips in a soft sweep before straightening to smile. “Hi, kitten.”

“Hi, Goldie.” She grinned up at him, momentarily forgetting what she was going to tell him.

“Ready for movie night at Dee’s?”

“Just have to shower and change.”

“You smell good. Like cake.” His grin turned a little roguish. “I like cake.”

“Behave yourself.” She smacked his arm lightly.

He didn’t even glance at the clock as he braced both hands on the kitchen bench each side of her, effectively imprisoning her. His eyes took on a lazy gleam of heat. “We’ve got time for a quickie and then a shower.”

Her heart skipped a beat. “Now, Goldie-”

“Now sounds great, kitten.” His hand was already at her bodice.

“Won’t you be defiling the uniform of the law?” She tugged at his heavy belt.

“Done that quite a few times already. Why stop now?” Laughing low, deep, he kissed the side of her throat, licking her pulse lightly to send delicious shivers through her.

So caught up in the growing heat of the moment, she almost forgot what she had to tell him.

      Almost.

As always sensitive to her mood, Kirk lifted his head, his teasing fading as he studied her. “Molly? What’s wrong?”

How could she tell him? “Um…well…”

      “What is it?”

      “Well…I….you know…”

Placing a finger lightly against her lips, Kirk said quietly, “Take a deep breath, kitten.” When she complied with a sigh, his eyes crinkled a little at the corners in amusement. “Okay, try it again.”

      Easier said than done. “Uh…”

He watched her, waiting, calm as always. Placing one hand on her hip, he squeezed gently, giving her silent support.

“Okay.” She took another deep breath. “Guess there’s only one way to say this.”

He remained silent, his calm presence steadying her nerves.

      “Remember when the condom broke?”

      He looked blankly at her.

      “I’m pregnant.”

There was dead silence for several seconds.

      He remained absolutely expressionless. “What?

“We’ll have to bring the wedding forward,” she babbled. “Or back. I’m sorry. I know this has ruined all our plans. I’m so sorry, I-”

      “Molly.”

His one quiet word silenced her.

Kirk looked her right in the eye. “You’re pregnant.”

      “Yes.” She swallowed.

      “We’re having a baby.”

      “Yes.”

His smile was slow, but it wreathed his entire face. His eyes sparkled, his hands hooked onto her hips to pull her against him. “We’re having a baby.”

The utter delight in his eyes was a relief, though she should have known.

Just as she should have known that he’d guess something else. His smile vanished, concern replacing it. “Molly, why were you so worried about telling me? Is anything wrong?”

“No. No, of course not.” Laying a hand on his chest, she looked up at him. “I was just worried that you might not want a baby right now.”

“Not want our baby? Molly, I’m ecstatic.” A slight frown creased his brow. “Aren’t you?”

“Me? I cried for joy when I peed on that stick and it showed positive. I just thought we hadn’t planned it, hadn’t even spoken of having kids, we had the wedding planned and everything, and now I’m pregnant and I didn’t know how you’d feel.” She pressed closer. “But you’re happy, and I should have known better.”

“Damn right you should have.” He tapped her derriere lightly with the flat of his palm.

Looking up at him, she smiled. “Damn right, because you’re the kind of man who loves all he classes as his, and that includes babies who come unexpectedly.”

      “Bet your sweet arse, kitten”

      “Goldie, you silver-tongued devil.”

About to kiss her, Kirk gave a sudden shiver. “Whoa!”

A white nose peeked over his shoulder followed by Sparkles who sat there, whiskers twitching.

“I think Sparkles will make an excellent big sister.” Molly rubbed her head lightly.

“As long as the baby doesn’t look like her.” Kirk stroked the little rat’s tail. “I don’t think I‘d be able to explain away whiskers at such an early age.”

      Molly wrinkled her nose.

Laughing softly, Kirk leaned down and kissed her before leaning his forehead against her’s. His eyes were warm, his hands moving to rest on her waist. “Never fear what the future holds, Molly. Whatever happens, wherever we are, we’re in it together.”

“I know.” She smiled. “You and me, together always. Oh, and baby makes three. And Sparkles and Henny and Penny make six.”

“One big, happy family.” He kissed her softly, gently, his heart in his eyes. “I love you, kitten.”

With a contented sigh, Molly snuggled into Kirk’s embrace, resting her cheek on his chest, his heart a strong, steady beat in her ear. “I love you, Goldie.”
