  “What?”

  “I have something to tell you,” she began, “a confession to make.”

  “Okay. I’m good at hearing those. What is it?”

  “It involves us and our future.”

  “You have my attention, counselor.”

  She smiled.

  “I’m pregnant,” she said.

  EPILOGUE

  Doctor Froman sat back in his chair and pressed his fingers together in cathedral fashion. His thick, dark brown eyebrows dipped toward each other as his forehead wrinkled. He had full, very feminine lips and a narrow face with a sharp turn at the jawbone. Not particularly a handsome man, Jules thought, but a man with expressive eyes, the doorways to the soul, wide open, exposing that soul.

  He smiled at him.

  “Why so amazed, Doctor Froman?”

  “Just the way you said it . . . you died and were reborn?”

  “Well,” Bois said with a sigh, “she stabbed me and just missed my heart, but the wound was deep enough to be as near to fatal as could be. Fortunately, I got medical attention from a close friend quickly and I was able to recuperate. But when someone you love and trust tries to kill you . . . well, that’s a form of dying, wouldn’t you agree?”

  “Yes, I suppose so.”

  “And when you return to life, renewed with even stronger vision, that’s a resurrection of sorts, too.”

  Froman nodded.

  Bois smiled.

  “It sort of makes you feel . . .”

  “Yes, how does it make you feel?” Doctor Froman asked, and, like a good psychiatrist, leaned forward to show real interest in the answer.

  Bois smiled.

  “Immortal,” he said.

  And then he laughed.

  And then it all began again.
