As they trooped out, Falconer turned to Carmichael with a question on his lips, and Carmichael was interested to hear what the inspector’s first question would be after that bombshell.
‘Where did the boys get Mr Hat?’ he asked, drawing an incredulous look from his sergeant. ‘I could do with one myself, although perhaps in rather more muted colours.’
