      A King Author Retelling

      Chapter 1

      Gwen

“Where there is kindness there is goodness. And where there is goodness, there is magic. It’s days like today that make me wish I had a fairy godmother by my side.” ~ Cinderella.

Gwen smiled and stood up from stocking all the freshly filled sugar containers back on the shelf. Ready for tomorrow’s service. Another day another dollar.

“You okay to lock up, Gwen?” Stanley Parker, the owner’s arrogant son, shouted from the front of the restaurant.

She heard the front doorbell ding as Stanley walked out. He obviously really didn’t want an answer. Gwen put her hand on the small of her back and sighed.

      Shit, not tonight...

This meant she would need to take out the trash to the dumpster behind the restaurant. Something Mr. Parker would never leave to a female employee. But Stanley was a different tool all together. All he cared about was himself. The female staff considered him as an egotistical man. Any chance he got; he used the situation to his benefit. A real piece of work in every one’s eyes, including Gwen’s

It was nights like tonight she wouldn’t mind a few courageous knights coming to her rescue. If she only could conjure up a little magic, she’d be set. A twinkle in her eye sparkled thinking about magic, that only lasted a second.

Annoyed by Stanley’s abandonment, Gwen forced her thoughts of using such witchcraft away. She had forbidden herself to use magic and thought of her father’s spells as a last resort. Her father Merl had been a well-acclaimed Arthurian historian, sought after by several elite conservatories.

Her father’s knowledge of the underworld was extensive. His popularity and outspoken obsession with legends and potions, caused her family to move many times and ultimately forced the conservator to release him from his tenure. Thankfully, all his potions had been handed down to Gwen along with a deeply instilled respect for magic.

They moved to Baltimore when she was in her senior year of high school, so that her father could continue lecturing on the medieval times and the legend of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table at a small community college in the county.

She had never known her mother, who had unfortunately died during childbirth leaving her father to raise Gwen alone. She had no memories of her mother, not even borrowed ones from Merl. Her father refused to speak about his deceased wife. Any time Gwen brought up the subject of her mother, her father would reply, “She sold her soul to the devil.” Leaving Gwen feeling hopeless of ever finding out her mother’s wrongdoing.

At the age of sixteen, it had made no sense in Gwen’s mind when her dad uprooted them again for the third time in less than three years to a city that was twice as expensive but smaller in housing then Albuquerque, New Mexico. They lived off the land, making their home in a small adobe building dating back to the Spanish colony. She loved living in the desert. Her father had the most amazing green thumb and could make just about everything grow in the high desert region. They were both happy and striving for the future when they moved.

      To Baltimore.

After a few years had passed, Gwen learned the “true” reason of why her father uprooted them. At first, she thought it was for a better teaching job, but that turned out to be false. The actual reason was heartbreaking once she learned the truth. Her father had been seeking medical care for a brain tumor. John Hopkins Hospital was known for its treatment and success rate of curing brain cancer. Her father’s chance of surviving an inoperable cancer was less than 2%. And with Hopkins being a world-renowned research and teaching institution, he would be given the latest and greatest possible treatment available.
