“I’m not sure how strong these arms are after a day like today,” Brant protested good-naturedly. He’d been working almost non-stop on their cabin for a couple of months now, relying on some of the men in town to teach him what to do. He’d never had blisters before, but he shrugged them off, saying they were a manly badge of honor. “I lost track of how much wood we unloaded.”
“All to make a home for me.” She rested her head on his shoulder. “It means so much to me that you’re doing this—I hope you know that.”
“My motivations are completely selfish. As soon as the house is finished, I get to marry you.”
She grinned. “I just hope it’s a good reward for all your hard work.”
They hefted their baskets and walked toward the long food tables that had been set up to accommodate everything that had been brought. From the looks of things, no one in the entire town of Belle would go hungry that day.
Ellen had gone up ahead to meet with some of the new friends she’d made, and Mariposa saw them giggling together like schoolgirls. It meant so much to her that Ellen was also finding friends in this community—she was growing to love it more each day, and she felt like for the first time in her life, she could put down roots and make a life for herself.
She turned and smiled at Brant. They could make a life—she had a partner now, a strength to offset her weaknesses just as she would do for him. With Aunt Ellen nearby and a growing relationship with her father, she felt as though there was truly nothing more she could want, no greater blessing she could possibly request. Her heart was full to brimming already.
