Yet as the year wore on, and winter came around, Cassidy found her belly getting big, and realized she was very pregnant.
She’d never seen Leon so happy.
And though the winter was harsh and long, the snow piling high, Leon had gathered enough wood to keep the fireplace going and save on the generator. Cassidy grew a real appreciation for sitting in front of the fire. Cradling her belly, imagining what her child’s life would be like.
She felt a light tinge at the back of her neck. Then realized Leon was watching her from the doorway.
He came into the room, a wry grin on his face.
“What is it?” she asked, confused by his expression.
But he got down on his hands and knees, and pressed his face to her stomach once more, as he often did. He gave both her and their future child a kiss, before pulling out something in his hand.
“I found this in a hidden safe. It’s taken me this long to crack the combination,” he said, still grinning. And she understood it all when she saw it.
A ring with a diamond so big, even her parents would’ve been envious.
“A ring more befitting my wife. The most precious woman on earth,” he said, slipping it onto her dainty little finger.
They’d made it. They’d not just survived the apocalypse, but thrived in it.
Together.
