The chopper landing wasn’t pretty, but they made it.

Just five minutes after they landed in Panama, Sal was whisked away in an ambulance.

“You going to be okay?” Connie asked, laying her hand on Sal’s head, as the ambulance sped along.

Sal nodded. “I’ll be fine...can’t even feel it anymore. You going back for Del ‘n’ the others right away?” she asked.

“The Panamanians will probably have a lot of questions first, but when they hear our story, I’m sure they’ll help.”

“They better hurry. There’s not much time.”

Connie squeezed Sal’s hand. “Going back with help ought to be a whole lot easier than the way we left.”

Sal nodded. “Think Josh is at the embassy?”

“We’ll check it out right away,” Connie said. “He’ll be frantic when I tell him you were shot.”

Sal grimaced as the ambulance hit a huge pothole. “Make sure you tell him it’s only a flesh wound, or he’ll hurt everyone who slows him down on his way over.”

Connie grinned. “Will do.” She gently leaned forward and carefully kissed the top of Sal’s head. “Thank you so much for all you’ve done.”

“Hey, I didn’t do anything except get shot. Now...go find Delta!”

Several hours later a crisply-uniformed Panamanian army lieutenant escorted Megan and Connie from the hospital to the army headquarters.

Almost as soon as they walked in, an officer began firing questions at them.

      “What’s he saying?” Megan asked.

“They want answers, Megan. Answers only we can provide, and they’re not letting us go until they’re satisfied.”

After hours of interrogation, Connie and Megan finally convinced the captain who was grilling them of the truth of their story. At last, he agreed to send a search party...but not until the morning.

While the women waited for a taxi to take them to a hotel, Megan washed her face and looked at herself for the first time in weeks. She looked much older, and the white butterfly bandage on her cheek stuck out against her bronze skin. She’d lost weight, and her face appeared sunken and hollow. But she’d made it. Well...she’d almost made it. It wasn’t a success without Delta. Megan pushed the thought away. She would not allow herself to think about a life without her.

      Delta was a survivor.

      She was a powerful swimmer.

      She was a champion.

Hell, Delta Stevens had just become a warrior.

      She couldn’t be dead.

      Could she?
