“Lurch White,” murmured Luke. “I like the sound of that.”
And then Beau took Dottie by the hand and led her off to a quiet corner of the yard.
“I suppose I can’t resent you for that,” she said with a smile, “although you did cheat.”
“No, I suggested that people might be doing all three of us a favor—you, me, and Luke—if they chose my lovely painting.”
“Yes, I’m sure you did. Thank you for that. It was a grand gesture, and Luke is glowing with it.”
He tucked a lock of Dottie’s hair behind her ear. “You gave me the idea. You’re always doing things for other people, Dottie. Always trying to make everyone around you happy. I love that about you. I love a lot of things about you.”
“I want them to be happy because I know how important happiness is…and how hard it can be to find.” She lifted up to kiss him, savoring in the moment, in the joy of having their friends around them and the hope of the future before them. “I know that because I’m happier than I could have imagined possible. I have you, Beau Buchanan, and I have all the luck I need.”
