  "A Sarcastic Life"

  Cassie And Jade

Cassie and Jade stood at the railway station with their arms intertwined. Silently, they eyed the mass of people as it grew larger.

As the babel of tongues lengthened, Cassie began to feel tired and bored, so she leaned her head on Jade's shoulder. She felt his cold leathery jacket. The only one he had. If she could still remember well, she might swear he wore it for three years, that is since they were married. "Eh, I can't believe how frugal he can be!" She thought to herself. But, when her sight dropped to the ground, she realized she didn't care so much about it.

She was accustomed with such things as poverty and plain life since the day she was born.

When Jade sensed her distraction, he turned his face toward hers and kissed her forehead. She looked up at him, a warm smile curling her lips. Then, surprisingly, her smile faded as fast as it had come.

"Jade ?" Cassie looked up at him.

  "Yeah ?" He answered.

"I'm hungry !" her lips curled into a pout.

"Ah Cassie! No, you know I don't have enough money !"

  "No, I don't care ! I'm hungry !"

  "I said.."

"I said I'm hungry !" She stomped her foot angrily.

People turned to stare at them.

"Okay okay ! Just shut up ! you are embarrassing me ! I'm going to buy you a sandwich as soon as we arrive home !" He said, his arm pulling now at her waist.

"Okay !" She giggled, her warm smile reappearing.

Five minutes later, as the couple could no more stand, they saw the train from a distance. Its whistles ringing the air with alarm. The mass of people began to gather and get ready. Determination and vigor were flexing their faces. But, Jade and Cassie, on the other hand, were awfully exhausted, and if they didn't sit later, Cassie would probably pass out. So Jade caught her wrist, and stared seriously into her eyes.

"If you don't get a seat this time, I swear I'm not going to let you sit in my seat like the last time."

"Okay okay I'll try !" She said with a sigh.

As the train drew nearer, people were already gathered at where the doors were supposed to stop. Cassie and Jade were among the firsts. Luckily this time they might sit both.

The moment the train stopped, it sent vibrations through the platform. And a strange silence hovered above the heads.

Clenching their fists, the crowd was as ready as the military troops.

The doors of the train finally slid open, and the crowd rushed in like a crashing wave. Screams and cries and names were called...it was such a noisy moment.

Some people going in collided with the bars inside the train, others fell over and were trodden upon, other ones were like spider men, they crawled along the walls, but Cassie and Jade hopefully made their way through them. Cassie was a little squeezed by two fat women when she almost reached the free seats. But, Jade luckily caught her hand and pulled her out.

There were two vacant seats, and Jade instantly threw himself in the corner, then Cassie sat next to him. They looked at each other happily, and puffed out a sigh of relief.

Tidying himself, Jade noticed how hot it would be in the next few hours, so he took off his jacket, put it on his lap, and crossed his arms.

The train began moving, gradually, as the atmosphere grew silent again and cosy.

Because of tiredness Cassie started to feel sleepy. She looked through half closed eyes at the yellow lemony light that flooded their carriage with warmth.

She even felt the vibration beneath her. It tickled her senses. There was a sweet smell of hot cakes nearby, it filled her nose, but she never knew where it came from. She couldn't resist it.

Slowly giving up to sleep, she somehow knew she was barely conscious about her surroundings, but she couldn't help but notice the people in front of them. An old fragile man next to an obese lady in her fifties.

The old man had a solemn face with sharp features, yet to Cassie's surprise, he didn't seem to bother about the lady occupying her seat and the half of his.

Jade at that moment was looking the other way where four business men with black suits were sitting. They looked all the same to him because of their identical clothes and sunglasses.

One of them had a black suitcase in his lap, and he seemed so careful about it that his hands traced drops of sweat on it.

Jade's eyes suddenly gleamed knowingly. He elbowed Cassie and she looked at him with unfriendly eyes.

"These men..." He whispered to her "remind me of Matrix !"

Annoyance suddenly reddened her face. "Jade ! Please keep quiet ! I want to sleep !"

"Eh ! Cruel girl !" He looked away, feeling frustrated at her indifference.

One hour later, Cassie was already asleep, her golden hair scattered over Jade's chest as she leaned on him. But Jade never bothered, he was looking through the window at the meadows and the green trees. Minutes later, when they arrived at town, the train came to a stop, and the business men, Jade remarked, stood to make their leave. They seemed in a hurry, their eyes however, scanning all the people in their way.

And the suitcase, Jade thought, I wonder what it contained.

He used his hand to support his head and gazed blankly at the business men's empty seats.

Blinking wearily, he glanced a shiny thing where the man with the suitcase was seated.

Suddenly, His eyes blinked several times then opened wide and looked again..

It was a pure colorless thing that beamed with light as the sun rays shone at it.

His heart made a flip when he recognized what it was.

  A DIAMOND !!

Swallowing dryly, he quickly turned to look ahead, he was surprised to find the old man looking at him, his eyes as wide as his.

  Crap !

Slowly, he pretended to look through the window again, and managed to lightly elbow his wife.

  Cassie didn't wake up.

  He elbowed her again.

  No response.

  Crap ! stupid Cassie.
