  Top Story

Report: ABC DEVELOPING REAL-LIFE VERSION OF GH!

It just does not stop! As GH is experiencing a creative, critical and ratings renaissance, THE NEW YORK POST reminded soap fans that the fight to save scripted TV on daytime is far from over.

On Friday, the newspaper revealed that ABC is in the early stages of developing a reality-TV version of GH featuring real-life nurses and doctors from L.A.’s U.S. Medical Center.

What is unclear is which piece of TV real estate ABC plans on airing the new series. However, the article quotes a source who hints the GH spin-off is intended for either cable or syndication.

  Yeah, right.

Anyone who knows ABC is acutely aware that the soap-killing network is probably either planning to replace KATIE (which has at least another year and a half on air) or GH with this new brainchild.

After failed attempts at counterprogramming ABC’s moronic decision to replace high performers AMC and ONE LIFE, it appears the network has given birth to a new strategy: resorting to parasitically leeching onto GH’s brand and audience in their Soapocaust plot instead of creating any more lame lifestyle and talk shows which have come out of the inept ABC development branch.

  No shame.

Clearly, ABC leaked this information to THE NY POST to test the temperature out there. And so far, it’s pretty cold.

When will ABC realize we won’t accept anything in the ABC daytime arena other than our beloved AMC and ONE LIFE?

Probably when ABC hits financial rock bottom.

Final thought: I wonder if Brian Frons is attached to the project because this sounds like it has his slimy name written all over it!

  LARRY HAGMAN DEAD AT 81

TV icon Larry Hagman, who played DALLAS's J.R. Ewing, both in the original CBS series and the TNT reboot, died fittingly in a Dallas hospital on November 23 at the age of 81. The cause was complications from his battle with throat cancer.

In an issued press release, CBS said, “Television has seen many stars, but there will only be one Larry Hagman. Larry was a larger-than-life personality, both on-screen and off — a master showman and brilliant actor who brought to life a character that transcended the medium and truly captivated a nation.  Today, we mourn the loss of a friend, but remember a man who brought true greatness to his craft and a television character in J.R. Ewing that will never be forgotten.”

Thankfully, the superstar, who spawned the “cliffhanger,” got to be a part of the critically acclaimed and highly successful DALLAS reboot. Reportedly, Hagman has filmed several key episodes for season two of the TNT/CTV soap, which will debut on January 28, 2013.

Like Hagman, whose ashes will be scattered around the world, J.R. will get a proper send-off on DALLAS posthumously, promise producers.

Do you think someone will kill J.R. Ewing in another mystery? I doubt it. Regardless, the DALLAS premiere will no doubt be one of the most highly anticipated and buzzed about season premieres in recent history.

More sad news: THE HUFFINGTON POST reports that former GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS scriptwriter Emily Squires pass
ed away last Wednesday at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital. Squires also wrote for SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, THE SECRET STORM and directed episodes of SESAME STREET. She was 71.

  WHY IS COURIC LAWYERING UP?

Insert laugh track here: On the heels of two local ABC affiliate co-anchors quitting on air (!), comes news that Katie Couric has sought advice from power lawyers including Allen Grubman after her executive producer Jeff Zucker’s name repeatedly came up as a candidate to head up CNN, sources exclusively tell PAGE SIX.

Zucker has been tapped to become the head of CNN Worldwide after Jim Walton announced he was stepping down. Zucker owns a large portion of Couric’s new daytime show, creating huge complications should he leave. However, last week Mark Shapiro, formerly Dick Clark Productions chief executive, listed as a CNN front-runner.

A source said, “When Jeff’s name was first touted, Katie met with Grubman to look over her contract.
