  The Box Recorder

One day you wake up and you awake from the monotony of everyday life. You find something new, you believe in something different, or you come to a new realization. I found something. Something weird, but it gave meaning to my life. It gave me purpose. People’s lives now depend on me, and I don’t know why. This old box recorder, It gives me the names and locations of the people who are about to die and its m duty to go find them and save them and right now, running down the block I’m on my way to save Jasmine Dent, she’s a doctor, and she is about to be hit by a train.

Jasmine sits in her seat at the stop in front of a train track. A baby begins to cry. She turns around and tends to the baby. “It’s okay joey, momma’s right here.” She says. She hands him a bottle and she looks up and notices a blue truck careening for her car. “Oh my God!” she yells. The truck hits her and flips her car directly onto the track. Jasmine, still conscious in the upside down truck hears her baby crying. She notices that his car seat is still intact and he is fine. “Thank God” she says relieved.
“Ahh!” she yells. as she stretches to get undone from her seatbelt she is hit with searing pain in her leg. The horn blares in the background, and she notices that the distant sound is the train coming down the track.
“Joey” she says sadly. As she begins to accept her fate, a man quickly kneels down in front of the car.
“Jasmine!” he asks. “Help me please” she replies, “Help my baby.” “My name is David Anderson, and I am here to save you.” He reaches for her seatbelt. “Save my Baby!” “You have to save my baby!” she yells. “Miss, I am going to get you both out of here, okay.” He says.
He pulls her from her seat, and moves into the car to save her baby. “Please! You have to hurry, it’s coming!” She yells. He manages to crouch down in the backseat, and unbuckles the baby. He then leans back and slides through the broken back window. He rushes from the car just as the train destroys the car.
The paramedics arrive and put jasmine on a stretcher. They are about to pull her into the ambulance when she yells for him.
“Please. Please come over to me.” She says.
“Thank you for risking your life for me” she says. With an unconvinced face he replies, “Your welcome.” He walks away.
dinky and dank hotel room, where sweat stains and piss stains cover the walls. The overwhelming scent of old food, and motor oil from the mechanics shop next door swallows the fresh air in the room. David

walks over to the box. “One more down” he says to himself. He opens it up, and waits for the recorder to speak again. “Jasmine Dent and Amanda Dent...4178 N. Chambers, Mugger with two guns.” It says “Why!” He yells. “Why do you keep giving me names? When will this be over.” With hesitation he says, “jasmine Dent, again?” Why am I saving her twice, I have never had to save someone more than once. What does this mean?” He ponders.

  The recorder speaks again.
“Protect Jasmine Dent, You’ll need her. 04-06-2012. “
“That’s tomorrow.” With a click from the recorder, he shuts it and looks at his damp and broken hotel bed and jumps into it. “When is this going to be over?” he asks himself as he easily drifts asleep.
The Next day Jasmine walks with Crutches going to her house, having just been released from the hospital.
“Wait your walking way too fast on those crutches you need to slow down.” Says her sister.
“I just want to hurry and get back in my bed.” She replies. A kid in a hood steps in front of her with his hands in his pockets.
“You where supposed to die yesterday Jasmine” he says. “But I’ll fix that” he pulls two guns out of his hoodie pockets And points one at her and her sister.
“Oh my God” says Amanda. As he prepares to fire, he notices a guy is behind him with a gun to his head.

“Please don’t make me do this.” David says. “I have to protect her by any means necessary. You don’t have to die but I will kill if I have too.” The kid turns around with tears in his face.
“It told me I would die if I didn’t kill her. I need to do this.” “What said that?” replies David. “The box recorder... this damn box recorder I found. I don’t know why, but the last time I didn’t listen I ended up in the hospital.” He says. He turns to point the gun at David.

“Now leave man, or I’ll kill you.” David drops down and sweeps his legs, causing the kid to fall to the ground dropping both guns.
“I know what you’re going through,” says David. “I was told to protect her. And I will. I feel sorry for you, but that wont stop me.”
“A box recorder” says Jasmine I have one too, and it told me to Protect David Anderson Today.”
“That’s what this is.” Says another man that walks up to them. “It’s a Game. You either play, or you die.” He points a Gun at David. “I have been playing for years, and I was told to kill you David. It’s you or me my man.”
Jasmine Smacks him with her Crutches and cracks his skull. He falls to the ground lifeless. “I protected you” Says Jasmine. Now we need to find out what’s going on. All of us”
“Even you kid. But do anything stupid and I wont hesitate.” Says David
“I wont,” Says the kid

In one last moment David thinks, “They have Box Recorders? I’m not alone?”
