  The Haunted Weir Working Series

(Blood Lantern Available exclusively through the mailing list)

This series was written in response to very tangible demons, both real and inside, that I thought would swallow me. My response to that time of trauma and trial was to create something from all that dark energy. This book is dedicated to that: the magic and majesty of writing, storytelling and the true power it gives us when we create, read and experience something that can come from nothing but a few written words.

  Prologue

  Weirimen

A barrier exists between your soul and pure evil. A hint of evil exists in all people, just as even the cleanest water has imperfections. Like a lake, your own inner damn keeps the majority of evil out of your soul’s waterways. Bad thoughts still happen, dark intentions, crimes against each other, but there is this device in all people known as a Haunting Weir. The Weir protects from Primary Evil, a force altogether different from everyday bad thoughts, petty ugliness and random acts of unpleasantness.

Primary evil has a face. Its voice perforates your dreams. It hums to you when you are at your lowest, comforts you with ideas of self-harm, violence against those you hate or covet, and incites the most depraved unthinkable plans, ideas, and maladies that should not otherwise exist in the world. Primary evil has a grin.

It takes the forms of demons, devils, and creatures of nightmare: things born of nothing but hate, darkness and the secretion of neglect, starvation, and hopelessness. The manifestations are vast and varied, in as many forms as any malignant cancer, born of darkness in both people and random swirling energy in a universe not fully understood. They can be dealt with as a doctor would a parasite.

When something breaches a Haunting Weir, it causes sickness, possession, unexplained harrowing acts and the Weirimen are sought out. Pillars against the darkness, they are trained as surgeons of the soul, able to root out and remove the evil that has attached itself to the light of someone’s existence. Both hunters and healers, these gifted few serve those afflicted by darkness rarely even understood. Inside everyone exists a Haunting Weir but only the Weirimen can reseal it once evil has broken through its barrier.
