  Hooray, it’s our turn now!

Wait, does that mean we don’t get our own story?

That’s not fair, I don’t want to share with you four!

Yeah, like I want to have your annoying voice in my story.

…I think maybe I should explain what’s going on before we confuse everyone even more. My name is Dust and you’ve already met my siblings. Guys, why don’t you introduce yourselves before you get too carried away.

  What’s up, my name’s Speck.

  I’m Kuroi.

  I’m called Thing 2!

  No, I’m Thing 2, you’re Thing 1.

…oh, right, my bad. Thing 1 at your service!

Now that you know our names, let’s begin. First I’d like to say that Thing 2 and I are the only girls, so don’t expect too many intelligent things to be said throughout our little story…the boys aren’t too bright.

  Hey, take that back!

  We are too!

  …actually I think she has a point.

Why are you siding with her Kuroi, you’re a guy too you know.

Of course I am, but considering you’re both a little short on brains, what she said was basically true.

Great, Kuroi’s acting all smart again. Let’s pounce on him Speck!

  Sounds good to me!

  Hey, get off!

  No, you deserved it!

  Yeah, what he said!

…like I was saying, not too bright are they.

It’s hard to believe we’re related to them isn’t it Dust.

Well, every family has to have at least one ditz.

So why’d we get stuck with three?

  …obviously we got unlucky.

Hey, why are we here anyway? We’ve never been on a mission before so what do we have to talk about?

I don’t know, but we’ve got to say something. Mom said the book deal included us and that we’re required to give them a story.

Let’s talk about how awesome I am!

Pfft, yeah right. We all know I’m the awesome one.

  In your dreams Thing 1.

Well at least I don’t run into walls.

Hey, you promised you wouldn’t mention that!

Oh knock it off you two!

Kuroi help! Thing 2’s trying to kill me!

No, this is your problem, deal with it yourself.

Ouch, don’t bite me you little brat!

ENOUGH ALREADY! Thing 2, leave those guys alone. Speck and Thing 1, quit causing problems. Now, we’ve got a story to tell so can we please get started.

But we still don’t know what to talk about.

Ooh, I know! Pick me, pick me!

Really Speck, just speak up. Don’t stand there waving your paw around like that, you’re going to poke someone’s eye out.

Let’s talk about that time we made a mess of Mister Felix’s offi-.

Shut up Speck, you know we’re not supposed to mention that…ever. Mom will kill us if she ever found out what we did.

Or worse, she’ll let Mister Felix deal with us.

  NO!

Moving on now. So, does anyone have any other ideas?

I say we tell them about the time we ambushed Kai.

I remember that. Good times, good times.

Ambushed my butt. All you guys did was stumble down the stairs and accidentally run into her.

Not true, we totally planned that.

  Yeah!

Oh give me a break. Who are you trying to fool? We all know that you’re not brave enough to ambush a dog.

Well what have you ever done, huh? You spend your days following mom around. I doubt you’ve ever done anything interesting.

Have so! Why just the other day Dust and I managed to sneak into the spare room and went exploring. Isn’t that right Dust?

Yes. Though to be honest, we were only looking for a way out.

  I snuck outside once.

No way! Seriously? You’ve been outside? What’s it like?

Wet. There was water all over the ground, and there were lots of weird smells too. I didn’t make it very far though; the Human caught me before I could get past the stairs.

Bummer man. I’m going to explore out there one day, and I even have a fool proof plan on getting out. I just need to be big enough to reach the little turny thing on the door and then I’m gone.

Like you’ll ever be that big. Just look at those tiny feet of yours.

Hey, I’m still just a kitten, give me a break here. In a few years I’m sure I’ll be huge.

  Keep dreaming buddy.

You’re just jealous that I’m the oldest.

  What?! I never said that!

Come on, don’t start the whole ‘I’m older than you’ fight again.

Yeah, who cares who’s the oldest; it’s the smartest one that’s the most important. And everyone knows I’m the smartest one here. Other than mom of course, because we all know she’s the smartest one in the whole world.

You must be joking. If anyone got mom’s brains, it’s me. I was even named after her.

The Human named you that because you look like her, not because of your brains…or lack thereof.

  Take that back!

Ooof! Hey, get off my tail!

Great, the girls are fighting. What are we supposed to do now?

You pulled my fur out, how dare you!

Ignore them. I’d rather not get scratched to death for butting into their fight.

  Ow, my paw!

I know what you mean. Last time Thing 2 nearly tore my ear off when I tried to separate them.

I say we go tell mom and let her deal with them.

Good idea, then they’ll get in trouble too. It’s a win-win situation.

  Don’t even think about it.

Eh heh heh, hi Dust. What’s up?

  Sure, now you play dumb.

Thing 2, how are you my dear sister?

Shut it Thing 1. And don’t think I can’t see you trying to sneak off Kuroi. Get back here and take your punishment like a man…er, kitten.

  How about…no.

  Get back here!

Go get him Thing 2. I’ll keep an eye on these two until you get back, and then we can figure out the perfect punishment for them.

Hey now, we didn’t actually do anything to you.

True, but when has that ever stopped us?

I think now would be a good time to yell for mom.

  Help!

Well that was fast. I didn’t expect you to find Kuroi that qui-.

  Everyone, run for cover!

Whoa, what’s going on you two?

The Human’s back and she wants to give us a bath! I just barely managed to escape!

  No, not the water!

Hide, don’t let her find you!

  I call under the bed!

But that’s not fair, I was here first!

Move it or lose it you two!

  I’m too young to die!

  o o o o o

In the end none of them escaped, and they eventually found themselves hud
dling together in a corner under the bed, whining about being wet and planning revenge on the evil Human who doused them in water.

  o o o o o

I’m never letting that Human near me again!

How dare she treat us this way, we have rights!

  …no we don’t.

Oh be quiet, no one asked you Kuroi.

You know, having a bath isn’t so bad. And it’s not like she gives them to us all the time or anything.

Speak for yourself, getting wet is awful. It takes me days to get my fur to lay straight after she scrubs me clean. And that soap of hers smells funny.

I say we fight back next time. No more baths!

Yeah, there’s no way she’ll be able to take us all!

Count me out. Your plans never work and I have no desire to end up in some awful situation again.

  But this time it’s foolproof.

  Uh huh, sure it is.

What about you Dust? Ready to join our bath protest?

No. Kuroi’s right, you two have a knack for getting yourselves into trouble.

  Thing 2?

No way. Last time I went with one of your plans I was last to eat for a week. I refuse to eat crumbs again.

Fine, be that way. We’ll just do it ourselves, won’t we Speck.

Right! Wait…um…what were we talking about again?

  …never mind.

  o o o o o

And so ends our tale of the five adventurous kittens. What happens next is anyone’s guess…but it’s probably safe to say that they’re not going to be on the top of the SpyKat recruits list anytime soon.
