A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
There weren’t a lot of women writing science fiction in the 1950s, but among those few, only a couple of names are still widely remembered: Leigh Brackett, Andre Norton, C.L. Moore.
But what about Evelyn E. Smith? During the 1950s, she regularly published—under her real name—short stories and novelettes in magazines like Galaxy Science Fiction and Fantastic Universe. These range from post-apocalyptic satires, such as “The Last of the Spode” and “The Hardest Bargain,” to “BAXBR/DAXBR,” where she explores the dangers of Martian crossword puzzles. She also wrote four science fiction novels, which chiefly deal with questions of gender identity. Like all of her work, they are characterized by their wit and humor. At her best, she was the equal of anyone—male or female—writing for the pulp magazines.
Unfortunately, without a steady stream of science fiction novels to back up her short stories and keep her in the genre’s notoriously short-lived attention, Smith (1922-2000) has largely been forgotten.
She may have diluted her brand name by spreading herself across multiple genres—mystery and romance, besides science fiction. And she was not just a writer, but also a crossword puzzle compiler.
Today she is probably best known for writing the “Miss Melville” mystery series, which chronicles the exploits of a middle-aged socialite-turned-assassin. (She also wrote several gothic romance novels under the pen name Delphine C. Lyons.) But I will always associate her with science fiction, and I’m sure you will agree that she is a vastly underrated talent.
