Healthy Lifestyle and Learning Languages

Enrique Kates

  Healthy Lifestyle and Learning Languages

  Introduction

Hello, my name is Enrique Kates! I’m a highly experienced conversational English and Spanish teacher.

In the last few years I’ve had several students that excelled in their Language Learning Process.

Due to my natural curiosity, I tried to analyze some of the reasons.

I saw a slight connection between Healthy Lifestyles and their Language Learning Process.

Recently, I spoke with Margaret Kamalova. She is a student of mine, and definitely falls in the category mentioned above.

I expressed to her my thoughts, and it caught her interest.

Margaret is a professional Yoga Teacher.

I asked Margaret to collaborate with me in writing an article about the connection between Healthy Lifestyles and Language Learning Process.

By the way, the students I referred to before, came from different countries and did not know or ever met or spoke to each other..

  Thanks,

  Enrique C. Kates

  About Margaret.

Margaret is a professional Yoga teacher

My name is Margaret Kamalova. I’m a yoga teacher. I was born in the family of a doctor and an engineer, of people who love active life. That is why I always go in for sports. And finally I understood that yoga is universal knowledge, which I liked to get to know. So yoga became the lifestyle and occupation of my life. I’ve been teaching yoga since 2005. I teach yoga in B.K.S. Ayengar tradition, it’s classic hatha yoga of Patandgali. Now I work in Federation “Yoga Practika” in Moscow.

I can say that a person, who does yoga in our days is:

  - Thoughtful,

  - Interested in physical and mental health,

  - Concerned in developmental methods of body & mind.

People like this, always ask me how to optimize their time during a day. They’d like to spend time with maximum benefit. For example:

  - how and when to eat?

  - which hours a day are better for physical, intellectual work?

  - when is the best time to learn (languages, science)?

  - when is the best time to do yoga?

  - when and how much to sleep, to rest?

  - how I can do all of it and spend time with family?

These are difficult and relevant questions in our lives. But a decision can help people to live more EFFECTIVELY.

  So, decision is a time-table!

To be honest, not only my clients encouraged me to scrutinize this problem. Firstly it was Enrique- my English GURU!

He said to me when I didn’t prepare homework in time: “ Margaret, organize your day to have time for all businesses! Its called - time- management!”

And I decided to do it: to make an effective time-table of a day! When I was a student my yoga teacher said to me about Vedas.

The Vedas (Sanskrit वेदाः véda, "knowledge") are a large body of texts originating in ancient India. They are the original scriptures and contain spiritual knowledge encompassing all aspects of our life. In school we can learn many things, but unfortunately not the important, existential ones. These are elaborated on in the Vedas, a sort of manuals on how to use this world and how to live in it. Obviously, they should be available to everyone.

So, I found recommendations of managing a day in the Vedas!

  Vigil, Activity and Nutrition:

  TIME

  ACTIVITY

  NUTRITION

  5- 6 a.m

  wake up,

  best time to pray

  drinking milk

  6- 7

  best time

  for remembering!

  (learning languages

  for example)))

  7- 8

  time of logic (languages too))),

  some stretching exercises (yoga)

fruits, honey, dried fruits, milk products  (cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese curds), pastry, sweets

  8- 10

  active exercises, work

  11.30- 13.00

  dinner-time

  all you want! )))

  13- 16

  special active work

  16

  pause for tea

  water, herbal tea

  16.15- 18

  active work

  18-20

  supper

  stewed vegetables, paste,

  Not sweets and pastry

  21.30- 5.30

  deep sleep

Now I am doing an experiment! I wake up early and learn English with Enrique at 6 a.m)

During the first time I have some results:

  - I started to sleep well

  - I have a lot of time for different businesses

  - I have time to practice yoga

  - I have time to do my homework !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  I AM HAPPY

  …..The show must go on!.....))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Do you want to try it with me?

These points can result in harmony of body, mind and soul.

  1)Diet

“We are indeed much more than what we eat, but what we eat

can nevertheless help us to be much more than what we are.”

  ~Adelle Davis

Diet and stress are strongly linked to each other.

It is said that eating is a form of self-medication.

Being aware of your food choices and how you feel after eating different foods is essential to stress reduction.

Everybody goes through moments when they feel insecure, burned, unsuccessful, tired, lazy, frustrated, depressed, anxious, emotional, and other negative feelings.

Every person is unique and has different needs in diet.

Following  ayurvedic knowledge (Ayurveda- traditional east science) , people can perceive their physiological, psychological characteristics and use their individual diet.

Human as a nature consists of 5 elements: water, fire, air, earth, ether. If human wants to be healthy, these 5 elements must be in balance. Of course each human has to seek its individual set of elements in the body- the individual balance, exactly for this person.

Ayurveda picks out 3 types (doshas) of people. They are: vata, pitta, kapha.

  Vata symbolizes - wind, dryness - tall, thin, creative, nervous, emotional people;

  Pitta - fire, heat -  people with beautiful appearance, brawny, greasy skin, life eyes;

Kapha - humidity, gravity - they are of great endurance

  thickset, inclined to stout.

Follow to your Dosha - and you’ll be healthy all your life.

Eating is a powerful act filled with the potential for healing or harm.

One way to access our healing needs is to use the ancient Vedic chakra system, which supports the idea that we are composed of a multitude of vibrations. These vibrations are found within the body and correlate to various aspects of life. Since these are subtle energy centers, they can be i
mpacted both by the vibrations of food and by the spirit of eating. We may be choosing certain foods to heal these centers or those that throw our energy off balance.

And of course don’t forget to drink 2-3 liters of water a day!

  Exactly water.

Here are just a few of the benefits:

  - 1 When you drink 2-3 liters a day, you can make life longer, because water cleans body, helps out toxins.

  - 2 Water helps to suppress the appetite, to make fat and water-salt metabolism better.

  - 3 Drinking water helps to avoid chronic dehydration. Symptoms of chronic dehydration: fatigue, energy loss; constipation; high and low blood pressure; digestive disorders; gastritis, stomach ulcers; eczema; acid-alkaline imbalance; cholesterol; respiratory troubles; cystitis, urinary Infections; rheumatism; premature aging.

2)Routine of day (sleep and wakefulness)

  Sleep

Sleep is an important part of overall health and well being. When you don't get enough sleep you are slow, and lack focus, Everyone is busy with work, family obligations, school and fun, before sleep. But the reality is that most adults need at least seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

  Benefits of Sleep

These are just a few reasons why you need to make sleep a top priority in your life.

Improves learning and memory. Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory.

Positive impacts on weight and metabolism. Sleep deprivation may cause weight gain. Getting enough sleep can aid in weight management by also helping you to have more energy for regular physical activity.

Increases safety and performance. Lack of sleep contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime and can increase your risk for injuries while driving or while engaging in sports or other activities that require you to pay careful attention to detail. Being well rested can help increase the quality of your performance at school, work, sports, and for many other activities.

Better mood. Lack of sleep may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness.

Strengthens immune system - Getting good sleep on a regular basis helps your body to repair from all the stressors it is exposed to, which also strengthens your immune system.

Reduces stress. A good night's sleep can help you relax by lowering your blood pressure and levels of stress hormones. It can also help you to cope better with future stressful life events.

  3) Physical Exercise

Regular exercise or physical activity helps many of the body’s systems function better; keeps diabetes, heart disease, and other diseases at a distance, and is also a key ingredient for weight loss.

If exercise and regular physical activity benefit the body, a sedentary lifestyle does the opposite, increasing the chances of becoming overweight and developing a number of chronic diseases.

Just adding a little movement to your life can:

  - Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes

  - Improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  - Reduce stress

  - Enhance self esteem.

  - Improve joint stability.

  - Increase and improve range of movement.

  - Help maintain flexibility as you age.

  - Maintain bone mass.

  - Prevent osteoporosis and fractures.

  - Improve memory in elderly people.

Exercise is one of those rare things where the hype actually meets reality. Next to not smoking, getting regular physical activity is the best thing you can do for your health. Any amount of exercise is better than none. The more you get, the better. And remember: Cutting back on sedentary pastimes is just as important as becoming more active.

How much exercise is needed to produce those effects?

Even a brief walk at low intensity can improve mood and increase energy. As little as 10 minutes of aerobic exercise can have a positive effect.

Walking is an ideal exercise for many people—it doesn’t require any special equipment, can be done any time, any place, and is generally very safe.

Though walking has health benefits at any pace, brisk walking (at least 3 miles per hour) is more beneficial than slow walking.

  Psychological Benefits of Exercise

We often hear about the physical benefits of exercise (e.g., increasing heart health), less often are the psychological benefits promoted. Yet, engaging in a moderate amount of physical activity will result in improved mood and emotional states. Exercise can promote psychological well-being as well as improve quality of life.

The following are common psychological benefits gained through exercise.

  - Improved mood

  - Reduced stress as well as an improved ability to cope with stress

  - Improved self-esteem

  - Pride in physical accomplishments

  - Increased satisfaction with oneself

  - Improved body image

  - Increased feelings of energy

  - Improved in confidence in your physical abilities

  - Decreased symptoms associated with depression

As people experience these psychological benefits, it is likely that they also will be motivated to continue exercises so that they continue to receive these benefits.

  4)Positive thinking (Meditation, Self Hypnosis)

  What is stress?

Stress is a physical, chemical, or emotional response to a demand made on an individual,

  Psychological Effects

  • Insomnia or sleeping too much

  • Inability to concentrate

  • Anxiety, confusion, anger

  • Yelling, hitting or blaming others

  • Boredom, fatigue, withdrawal

  • Excessive procrastination.

  And over time…….

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Depressed immune system

  • Cancer

  • Asthma

  • Allergies

  • Migraines

  • Insomnia

  • Depression

How are stress and diet connected?

Stress can cause a person to lose their restraint:

Those with more restraint in low-stress may eat more calories from saturated fat in high-stress:

Positive thinking helps us fight the worst enemy of our life: STRESS.

Contemporary people, especially those who live in megalopolises have to do mind -practices like meditation and self hypnosis. The nervous system of the human is very vulnerable. And negative changes could be terrible.

  5)Spiritual development

Spiritual development starts from the wish to cognize yourself. Learning the nature of your soul, reading books help to do it. But the most significant moment in the life of person is meeting the teacher. Because the teacher can help to understand the aim of a person's life. In Indian philosophy it is called- Dharma - the main thing that we have to know: why we were born, what we have to do on the planet....

In the case with learning languages it is very important to meet interesting teacher, who loves his job and with great motivation wants to share knowledge with you! It helps not only in learning languages, but in forming like a individual.

These points can result in harmony of body, mind and soul- PEACE.
