  Introduction

Imagine a book that is filled with stories and poems written by kids who love animals. Writing gives us the chance to use our imagination, to be creative, to explore our deepest thoughts and feelings, and to discover the gifts and talents we have inside.

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is proud to present original works that tell how the young authors are feeling in their lives and thinking about the world around them. The writings and artwork are truly from the heart and strive to portray the hands-on experiences with shelter pets and knowledge gained from educational speakers during our weeklong Shelter Friends Summer Camps. You will not find these imaginative and creative ideas anywhere else.

Cathy Houde and Diane Anderson, in collaboration with Jolly Time Books authors Karen S. McGowan and Dennis E. McGowan, headed up this endeavor. Our campers contributed a wide variety of works, from humorous to inspiring to deeply personal, to share their fun experiences.

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando educates, shelters, places, and heals pets and their families with compassionate, responsible care maintained to the highest professional standards. We create more caring communities by promoting happier, healthier pets and their families.

I hope you enjoy the stories and poems that our summer camp participants have put together for you. I encourage you to support our continuing positive community outreach programs.

Your support of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando goes directly to helping pets in need. Whether it is finding a dog or cat a new forever home, providing low cost vet services, or helping to prevent pet homelessness through our spay/neuter program, Pet Alliance's goal is to have happier and healthier pets in Central Florida.

Yesterday, a lady from Happy Paws Pet Resort told us how we shouldn't abuse certain breeds of dogs, like pitbulls and German Shepherds. She also brought in Champion, her friends pitbull. Then we made posters and took a picture with Champion while we held up our posters. She also showed us how we can tell people that certain dog breeds shouldn't be abused, like wear shirts that say text abuse, always assume rumors are false and other things that are saying about abuse.

Yesterday, people from another place that saves animals came here. They had a gray fox named Cooper, a possum without a name, actually 3 possums with no name, an iguana named Little Mamma, a raccoon named Rocket, and a snake named Bacon.

One of the dogs that I saw yesterday reminded me of my own dog, Rocky. He reminded me of him because he had his color and he was goofy. The dog's name was Boy (weird name). My favorite part was the cat room. Even though I'm allergic, it was still funny watching the cats (especially Max) move around.

I learned a lot today about training animals. I saw lots of dogs and cats too. I enjoyed playing with Max and Rusty and shelter dogs. One of the cats reminded me of my Aunt's cat. It was a little weird. It was funny when Max layed down when we were trying to train him. The most fun I had was giving a puppy a bath. Do you know how to train a dog too?

My favorite pet was Rusty. He was a big, shaggy loving dog.

  Woof!!

Today we first went to grooming, and bathed a puppy. Next we went to the cat room where we got to play with cats and put cat mobiles in their cages. Next we went to dogs and got to give the dog of our choice a bandanna.

Today the Orlando Police and their K9 cops came. We got to learn about the cops and their dogs. Also we got to see the bite suit training too. Next we went to cats and I met a cute little kitten. And then we went and played with Anber a German Shepherd. Then at training we did "Paw" with Rousey a Bull Dog. Next we got to write adoption letters to help get dogs and cats adopted.

  Allison Raymond

Today was really fun. One of my favorite things is the grooming. I like grooming because everyone got a turn to do something. Something else we did was the cat room. In the cat room there was a orange and white cat. He was very vicious. We could only play with him with the wand. One other thing was training. We got to train a dog named Max. I taught him how to sit, stand, fist-bump, and lay down. Today was so fun. I loved helping animals.

When I walked In I saw five cages. In the five cages there was a iguana, possoms, raccoon, a fox and a snake. During rotations at training I taught Anber how to army crawl and spin in a circle. At the cat room I found my favorite cat, her name is Ally. She is very sweet and all she does is lay around. During grooming we washed Bunk, I did the shampoo. At lunch we watched Scooby-Doo. After that we did a craft. We made a cat mobile.

Then we did rotations, in the cat room I found out Emerald and Breezy were adopted. In enrichment we gave dogs treats. In trianing I taught Laya how to roll over. Then we got a snack and went home. The End.

Today at rotations we started at grooming, I got to brush the dog. Then we went to training and we all got to train Anber. In the cat room there were new cats and kittens. In one cage there was five. Then lunch and arts and crafts. At arts and crafts we made turtles, puppets. We also got to choose to do coloring, word-search. Then, we put bandanas on dogs and we put cat mobiles in cat cages. Then it was time to go home.

  Today th
e K-9 Police came to camp. We went outside for a demenstration. Then at rotation instead of grooming we played with Anber. Then we trained Rousey. Then we went to CATS. Today Max was very interactive. After that was lunch. Arts and Crafts. We made adoption posters, I made mine for Chino. Next, we put our adoption posters up. After we did training and went home.

I loved the cat room. I loved playing with the cat Max. My favorite part was grooming the dogs. I was the towel person. Today I am looking forward to seeing forest animals.

Yesturday was so fun we got to learn all about pit bulls and we got to put our tie-dye collars on the dogs. Today I am looking forward to the K9 police dogs.

Today I found that a lot of cats were adopted which is great! Also we made cat mobiles and I got first choice on Pumpkin and Snowflake. We had Amber, LaLa and Roco. Roco was very shy so we had to give him some space. Also Amber was crazy!!! We did training with him. LaLa was awesome too. I might want to adopt Snowflake and Pumpkin. Sincerely, Owen Kroeger
