Poppet the fairy

Dee Collins

Poppet the fairy

Lottie was a seven year old girl, with shoulder length blonde hair. She was very popular in school and had lots of friends.

It was a nice warm sunny day. Her mummy had picked her up from school and they went to the park. Lottie played on the swings. While there, she met one of her friends called Penny. Lottie liked Penny but she wasn’t her best friend.

Both of the girls went over to the slide. While slipping down the slide, Lottie shouted “do you want to come round my house in a bit. We can play with Wendy”

The girl waited until she reached the bottom before she answered. “Ok dokey, but I get to cuddle her first.”

Back home, both of the girls ran into the house and straight out of the back door into the garden. Barely listening to Lottie’s mum comment. “Don’t get dirty, your still in your school uniforms.”

In the back garden, there was a large hutch to the left of the back door. Both girls bent down and peered into the hutch. A small gasp came from both their lips. “Mum, where’s Wendy gone?”

Angela, Lottie’s mum came to the door. She peered inside the hutch herself. “I don’t understand it. She was there this morning before I went to work.”

Angela put her hand in the cage. “Definitely, no rabbit here.”

Lottie put her arms around her mum, as tears started to roll down her cheeks. Angela stroked her hair “Now don’t get upset, sweetie. She can’t of gone far. Why don’t you two check around the garden and I will ask the neighbours if they’ve see a rabbit around here”

Angela walked back inside the house.

After checking behind a few bushes, both girls looked dismayed.

Penny peered outside the back gate “Let’s go over to them trees in the back field”

Lottie grabbed Penny’s arm “were not allowed in the woods”

“Don’t be silly. We will only be a few minutes”

So both girls totted off to the woods.

After roaming for some time, Lottie let out a little moan “I’m getting hungry, have you got anything to eat?”

“Maybe we should start going back” announced Penny.

As both girls turned around they realised they we’re lost.

Just then, there was a tiny noise that sounded like a sneeze. Lottie looked up to the branches above them “I think the noise came from above”

Penny looked up “I can’t see anything” she said, shading her eye’s with her hand.

“There, I can see something sparkling and shiny”

Penny looked to where Lottie was pointing “I still can’t see anything”

Just then, there was another tiny sneeze “Achoo”

  “Bless you” shouted Lottie.

A sprinkle of sparkling dust came floating down towards the girls. “Come down, we wont hurt you. I’m Lottie and this is my friend Penny”

There was a small rustling noise in the leaves and then a flickering light flew around them. Lottie felt a tiny weight on her left shoulder. Penny let out a gasp “Lottie, it’s a tiny person with wings”

Lottie turned her head to get a better look “Wow”

It looked like the little creature was trying to tell them something, but because it was so tiny, they couldn’t hear it.

Lottie looked towards Penny “We need something to make the voice louder. I’ve got an idea. Pass me a leaf of that tree”

Penny did as she was told and handed it to Lottie. She rolled up the leaf into a cone shape. She then held it up to her left shoulder, like a tiny megaphone.

All of a sudden a low soft voice spoke “Can you hear me?” asked the little creature.

  “Yes” Lottie replied.

“I’m not supposed to be here.”

Both girls looked puzzled. “What do you mean” asked Penny.

“When I went to collect the tooth. On my way out I tripped and fell out of the bedroom window”

“You’re a tooth fairy?” Lottie asked, while smiling.

“Yes, but I shouldn’t be here in the daytime. I’m only allowed to come out at night”

Looking at the little fairy, Lottie noticed she had a rip in her silvery pink dress.

“Your dress needs mending. You can come home with us and we will help you, but we are lost ourselves”

“Tell me, if you could fly above your house what would you see Lottie?”

“Well, there’s a paddling pool in the front garden and in the back there’s a big rabbit hutch, where Wendy sleeps.”

There was a little flutter on Lottie’s shoulder, and then the fairy flew off.

“Wait! We don’t even know your name, little fairy”

Penny leaned forward and whispered “Do you think she will come back?”

  “I don’t know”

Penny unhooked her backpack off her shoulders and started rummaging through it. She stood back up and produced two chocolate bars. She handed one to Lottie. “I was going to wait til after tea, but we might as well have them now” “Thank you”

Both girls were busy munching down the chocolate, when a familiar fluttering sound came from above.

The fairy took her position on Lottie’s shoulder again. Lottie held up the cone. “My name is Poppet” giggled the little fairy.

“That’s a pretty name” Lottie smiled.

“Follow me” The little figure fluttered off again. She didn’t fly as fast this time, so the girls could keep up with her.

After a few minutes of running, the girls started to slow down. “Look over there” Shouted Penny as she pointed to a familiar back garden. “That’s my house. You brought us back home Poppet”

Poppet came back and sat on Lottie’s shoulder. Lottie gently picked her up and slipped her into her dress pocket.

“Sorry Poppet, you will have to hide until we get to my room”

There was a tiny sneeze and a small sprinkle of gold dust puffed out of the pocket. “Shhh Poppet, we’re going into the house now”

“Mum, is it ok if me and Penny go upstairs to play?”

“Don’t be long, tea is nearly ready”

“We won’t” Both the girls shouted together, as they ran up the stairs.

In Lottie’s room, both the girls sat on the bed side by side.

Lottie reached into her pocket and gently pulled the little fairy out. Leaning towards her pillow, she plopped her into the centre. She looked like she was sat on a massive marshmallow. Lottie stood up and went towards her toy box. Getting on her knees, she started digging into the box. After a minute, she had a collection of little dolls on the floor by her side. Each wore a different outfit. Lottie looked towards Poppet. “We need to find you something to wear, so we can fix your dress”

Holding up a small purple and red dress, the fairy shook her head. After a few more selections, Lottie held up a light blue sparkling dress. There was a small thump from the pillow, as the fairy jumped up and down.

“I think she likes that one” Penny said.

Lottie stood up and took it over. She handed the dress over, after a quick exchange, Poppet stood in the sparkly blue dress. Lottie looked towards Penny “fit’s her perfect”

A shout came from downstairs “are you two coming down for your tea?”

“Coming” shouted Lottie, she leaned closer to the fairy “You wait here. We’ll be back in a min”

  *****

Both girls we’re sat at the kitchen table eating their meal. Lottie let out a small cry. “What is it?” asked her mum.

“I just bit down on my wobbly tooth. I think it’s ready to come out”

Angela looked at the front wobbly tooth “Not long now!”

  “Mum did Wendy come back?”

“Yes I locked her back in her hutch”

“Is it alright for Penny to stay
tonight? We’re making dolly dresses in my room”

“Ok. I will phone Penny’s mum, to let her know she’s staying”

Both girl’s slipped off their chairs and went running back up the stairs.

They both looked disappointed when they looked towards the pillow and found it empty.

Then there was a small fluttering noise. They both looked up towards the top of the wardrobe. There sat the little fairy, right on the edge with her little legs dangling over the side. She flew down and sat on Lottie’s shoulder. Lottie took the cone out of her pocket and raised it to Poppet.

“It will be getting dark soon” Muttered the little fairy.

“That’s ok” said Penny “You can sleep here with us”

After Lottie put the fairy back on the pillow, she went over to the dressing table. She started fumbling around in the draws and cupboards. After a few minutes she said “There you go Poppet, I’ve made you a little bed”

Penny went over to take a look. “That looks great.” It was a small woollen scarf rolled up, with a fluffy headband for a pillow.

After a while, both girls got changed for bed, and then went into the bathroom to brush their teeth.

Lottie came running into the bedroom. “My tooth came out!” she exclaimed and quickly went over to her pillow and put the tooth underneath.

Penny watched from the other bed. They both said goodnight to each other and turned off the light.

The next morning, the sun was shining brightly and a gentle breeze came in through the window.

Lottie yawned and stretched, then got out of bed. Looking at the floor, she noticed there was a lot of sparkling dust, following the trail, it led towards the open window. She ran over to the dressing table but the fairy was nowhere to be seen. At this moment Penny sat up in the spare bed “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Poppet’s gone!” Lottie quickly ran over to her bed and peered under the pillow. “My tooth as gone too.”

Penny dived out of bed. Both girls ran downstairs. Lottie’s mum was in the kitchen making a cup of coffee.

“Mum, the tooth fairy took my tooth and now she as gone as well.”

“That’s what tooth fairies do” Her mother said as she stroked her daughters hair. “Don’t worry; I’m sure she will be back tonight to leave you a little present.”

  *****

That evening, Lottie left her bedroom window open and sat up in bed. She was determined to stay awake all night to see if Poppet would return.

The next morning, Lottie woke up “Oh no” she whispered to herself “I must of fallen asleep after all.”

Getting out of her bed, she slowly lifted her pillow. Underneath, there was a small trail of sparkling dust, which led to a tiny bell and a tiny piece of paper with writing on it. Lottie went over to her desk and started looking through the draws. She returned with a magnifying glass. Looking at the tiny piece of paper it read ‘When fairies make friends, they stay friends forever. If ever you need me, just ring the bell.”

Lottie carefully picked up the tiny bell and went over to her dressing table. Lifting the lid of her musical box, she carefully laid the tiny bell inside. Closing the lid she patted the top of the box as she quietly muttered to herself “Friends forever.”
