  Atlantis Rising

Water courses back into the sea,

and the altar girls stain the statues

with juice from cherries they rub |

  on the granite.

The statues are all about the risen city,

as in the alley girls giggle and play

  the three bone game, laughing,

  pulling at their clothing.

Water coats the streets like cellophane

as vapor rises from the cobble of the lanes

while the gutters flow again with water

  and urine. |

  Atlantis has risen,

  It is morning,

  The red amphorae are opened

and the smell of olive oil covers the city,

  Like patchouli oil,

  Covers the young ladies.

This city has no concrete walls,

Its walls are its young men with spears.

  The shining path still leads

  to the amphitheater which has

  seen skits and plays

  written with conceit,

  performed by adroit liars.

  Eighteen

Her freckles grew brighter in the Summer,

  the sun transfigured her hair

  from strawberry blonde to,

  blonde strawberry.

  She never knew her beauty,

  Walking with grace,

  a minimum of waste,

a trace of a twelve year old,

  still narrow at the hip.

  A Dutch boy haircut,

draws a line above her eyes

that are the color of sea behind her.

  Dieciocho

  Ben Hur

  The wheels spin in gyre.|

Turning backwards on the movie screen,

  Unreeling the flaring nostrils,

  Of the four horses pulling

  The gilded car,

  Carrying the charioteer,

  Named Ben Hur,|

  On six laps so far.

  Dust rises like smoke,

  In the Coliseum up to

  The slaves' seats

  Where brazed mice on sticks

  Are being eaten.

  A Roman delicacy,

  And an exterminator-

Concession. The hermit on the sixth

of the seven hills of Rome,

  Missed only one thing,

  The races,

  The whip and the heat

  Of the stone stadium,

  Easing his arthritis,

While he loathed those in attendance.

Ben Hur was rumored to be,

  An Elusion mysterion,

Who drank mead and carried the

  Stalk of the golden poppy,

  Underground,

To be high in the earth,

  And to arise,|

  To a sacred blue sky.

  Ben Hur

  Llamado Ben Hur,

  En seis vueltas hasta ahora.

El polvo se levanta como elhumo,

  En el Coliseo hasta

  El esclavos asientos

Cuando los ratones soldado de palos

  Si se come.

  Un manjar romano,

  Y un exterminador?,

  Concesión.

  El Termitaño en el sexto

de las siete colinas de Roma,

Te has perdido una sola cosa,

  Las carreras,

  El látigo y el calor

  Del estadio de piedra,

  Aliviar su artritis,

Mientras que odiaba a los asistentes.

Ben Hur se rumoreaba que era,

  Un mysterion elusión,

Que bebían hidromiel y llevado a la

Tallo de la adormidera de oro,

  Metro,

Para ser altos en la tierra,

  Y a surgir,

  Para un cielo más azul.

  The Book of Laws

Leviticus admonishes not to cook a kid,

  In its mother's milk,

As this is a paradox like the,

  Front and back mirrors,

  In a barber shop,

  Showing numbers of heads,

  With the pinstriped towel,

Banded to the throat like a priest's collar,

White and orderly like the pressed table clothes,

Starched and covering the high tops,

  At the Tropicana,

Where you danced with Demi Moore,

Who thought you were a friend of her agent,

Agent of celluloid stars from which,

  Collars were made and cinema,

Both of which can burn white hot,

And powdered was used as the flash in the

  Photos of the roaring twenties,

  When
men had ended all war,

And soon all of them would be millionaires,

With homes that had cabinet doors,

And a dining room with chandeliers,

But their sons would carry rifles,

  In Europe twenty years later,

  Who condemned their own sons,

To a war in a swamp filled with

Army ants and fungus that ate at the finger nails,

And traveled as fast trench foot,

The war whose only victory was

  Thunderbird,

  In plastic bottles,

Into which no model ship would go.

The dead of Vietnam were cooked,

In their mother's milk and buried,

In tiny high rises throughout the land.

They all have been dead longer than they lived,

And almost all the fools who sent them have joined,

  Their sons.

  El Libro de Las Leyes

Levítico amonesta a no cocinar un niño,

En la leche de su madre,

Como se trata de una paradoja similar,

  Anverso y reverso espejos,

  Chantil Wu Soo

Wu is where China meets the world

  The Middle Kingdom,

  separating heaven and earth,

  The aevernity.

She was where the two worlds met,

Her father Chinese, her mother Black.

  He owned a Dodge dealership,

  In Fort Lauderdale,

  Where college students met.

Every year she would drive back,

  From Florida,

  In her new Lancer.

  She was smart.

  Seventeen when she matriculated,

  Into the Jesuit College,

Which had once been known as Sacred Heart.

Glory be to the Father, the Son,

  And the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning,

Is now and forever shall be,

  World without end, amen.

  Her hair was crow black

  Drift wood,

  When tied,

  In a high pony tail.

  The church smelled of incense

And candle wax in the dim,

The Lord hanging from his cross,

A gift from the Kennedy Foundation.

The priest was in a hurry for the year's,

Opening Mass and sounded a bit,

  Like a race track announcer,

  He chanted with such rapidity.

  She walked in time,

  Like a mime,

  Making no noise,

The sway of her hip so sensual,

  Her skin glowed from underneath

  Like candle wax.

  She was going to stand,

  One foot on earth,

And the other in the quintessential.

  Chantil Wu Soo

  Iba a pie,

  Un pie en la tierra,

Y el otro en la excellente

  The Dark Time

As the winter solstice rolls upon us

  Like a Spirograph picture,

  Lights hypnotize,

  Our minds synchronize,

  Merry Christmas,

  Math drunk,

  The sun so low,

  It lights the Negro city,

  With Euclidean precision,

  And Picasso shadows.

  Time for a drink

  And a decision,

  Of who shall get what,

  The quadratic equation of giving,

  To hedge our bet

  With the grim reaper,

Who is shoving us to an abyss,

  From which,

  The crux of the biscuit,

  Is eaten at Midnight,

Intoxicated with the blood of God,

  And math drunk,

  With light and dark,

  A chiaroscuro of a

  Roman solstice,

  Where stones jostled in pagan

  Hands,

  Which normally tilled the land,

The same light fell at Hiroshima,

  The Christmas after the bomb,

  The Christmas after the bomb,

  Waiting a week to drink

  From the Jeroboam

  Jug,

  To drink the stars,

To stop dealing with an irrational number,

  All that makes us dumber,

  Perplexed and

  Numb-er,

  Now numb

  Is in number,

For math is poetry's lesbian sister.

  At t
he end of Christmas eve and lost in slumber.

  Que normalmente se cultivaron las tierras;

La misma luz que cayó en Hiroshima,

La Navidad después de la bomba,

La Navidad después de la bomba,

  Esperar una semana para beber

  Desde el Jeroboam

  Jarra,

  Erotic Etchings

  The draft of us,

is not done in architects blue,

on a taught high rag parchment

  but is drawn

by an Etch a Sketch on a sky of TV gray,

  with plastic red borders,

  locked in a closet,

  these years,

  with ancient postcards,

  of faded cities. |

  Father Time

I see the things in my life,

  cruising through time,

  tempo dynamic.

I hear the sound of a clicking

  metronome.

It is the second after second

  of my life.

  Shadows lengthen in the afternoon,

As a breeze augers a cool evening,

like that summer evening of which Faulkner spoke

  seven decades ago

when he was young and didn't know

The sounds of the giant city

Tattoo on my hammer and drum,

that has echoed to my brain

  since before kindergarten,

  before the sound of death,

  had entered my being.

  “I am death,” he says,

  “Are you alone?”

  Padre Tiempo

  General Tom Thumb

  Tom was dumb

  but not plumb dumb,

  just dumb,

had moved to Florida for the sun

  and died the second week,

  on Miami beach,

after the boy put the lotion

  on the General's back,

  and had received a generous,

tip from a man less than an hour,

from his death under a warm light,

  soothing the aching, small spine,

  of an arthritic man,

who'd made a fortune from his height,

and who would be buried in child's coffin

  of white,

for the dwarf had never sinned,

  never married paper and pen,

  loved the rhyme,

  Bah, bah, Black sheep,

  which for three decades,

he chanted to get to sleep,

while thinking of the brown Nile,

  between two pyramids,

  and a sphinx.

  He was going there now,

  from the Florida heat,

to the land of the falcon and sand,

  the land of Pharaoh,

  and infinity's clapping hand.

  General Tom Thumb

  El enano lentejuelas,

  con una corbata de lazo,

  el derecho,la rectitud, el recto,

  embalsamado con el resto de,

  General Tom Thumb,

  Corto pero no tonto plomo,

  simplemente tonto,

  Bah, bah, ovejas Negro,

  Love Poem

  Come Daphne,

  You in Disraeli gear,

And I in proud Gladstone frock,

  Summer's eve beckons,

  The color of blue eyes.

  I leave the sandbox

When the wind written French Curve,

  My students alone.

  To address

  My calculation

  My square

  My cube

  My sum.

  Poema de Amor

  Vamos, Dapne,

  Que en la marcha Disraeli,

Y yo en vestido orgullosos de Gladstone

  Para la víspera de verano,

El color de los ojos azules.

Me retiro del recinto de seguridad,

Cuando el viento escrito los franceses Curva,

  Mis estudiantes solo.
r />   Para hacer frente a

  Que mi cálculo,

  Mi plaza,

  Mi cubo,

  Mi suma.

  Me and My Uncle

I stopped, the weight on one leg

  Waiting for the housewife

In front of me to place your order,

  What she said was:

  Veeks, Rube and Vap O

  Carbon has Tay toothpaste

While the next secretary has helped me,

  A thousand ten milligrams tablets,

  Valium blue

For my home in the hills,

That was a pink flamingo and white

  Motorhome

  While waiting for death

  From my treacherous

  Divorce and now

  In Nogales,

I was mad, bad and dangerous

  namely

  I drank champagne

  And suddenly snorted,

  On Friday night.

  Had become Nick Danger

  Leading to the border

  To order,

  And back with a cache,

For my city covered in snow.

  To sell returns for

  More coup

And a bottle of champagne Andrew

  All of which brings relief

In a lease in a seamless,

I thought it was a tunnel love

But it was a thing without name,

  I'll call my uncle

  Yo y Mi Tío

Me paré, el peso sobre una pierna,

  Lugar para la matrona,

Delante de mí para hacer su orden,

  Que ella dijo fue:

  Veeks, Vap O Rube y

  Casa rodante,

  Cuando esperaba la muerte,

  De mi traicionero,

  El divorcio y ahora,

  En Nogales,

Me había vuelto loco, malo y peligroso

  a saber,

Voy a llamar a mi tío,

  Poetry and A Passing Moment

It was the drumming of thumbs,

that drew my attention to her.

She looked up without moving her neck,

her eyes cocked like a pistol.

  We connected for an instant,

One that would not be remembered

if not for this piece of poetry.
