Tyler Smiths: Prom's Night, Page 2

Daniel Olas

All the graduating students took the front rows, so it wasn’t difficult for Tyler starring at Glen and Vanessa. Josephine at Eric,Kyle at Yvonne and Ella as both of them chats on and giggles at the same time.

“There you are!” Eric exclaimed poking Tyler softly on the shoulder and taking his seat beside him.

“Yeah! And where have you being?” Tyler asked still focused on Vanessa and Glen.

“Catching fun around the hall!” he said sitting down comfortably.

“And I heard the girl is our student.” Tyler asked again.

“Yeah… yeah!!” Eric answered quite faster than how the question came to him.

“And that you are both into one sort of relationship…”

  Eric cuts in.

“Maybe you should wait and find out yourself after the concert.” Eric said.

Just then, the stage light was turned on and the concert began with the entire performer gorgeously dressed in purple gown. The opera performance started and the girl took charge of the stage, though young and inexperienced –maybe this was not her first time of performing on stage but to BFHS students, this is her first time.

The music changes from blues to pop as more characters stepped on stage with the girl to set the stage on fire. Their dancing steps were very captivating as it took hold of everyone’s soul with excitement. As the concert continue, the excitement grew wild as all the students and every one present start clapping to the rhythm of the beat.

But suddenly, the beat died down and a more slow music could be heard coming through. The light behind her was turned off so that only she could be seen dancing and not even the stage again. Once again, she captivated her audience as she performed a ballet wearing white leggie and a mini jumper gown. Gradually, other dancers joined and they danced gracefully so that all present could not take away their focus from them for once.

In a short moment, the stage light went off again bringing loud cheers and applause from the audience. But then, the stage light turned on again with the stage background showing two shadow-like people holding themselves dancing.

The girl walked in from the out stage accompanied once again with loud cheers, standing ovation and rounds of applause.

“Who’s that girl?” Tyler asked as he took his seat.

“Katherine, the most talented in BFHS!” Eric said flashing a big grin.

  “How did you…”

  Katherine’s voice cuts him short.

“It’d be the pleasure of mine to invite the very person I cherished most to have a dance with me here on stage. Am I permitted?” she asked with an angelic voice that can melt the devil’s heart.

All the whole audience shouted “Yes! Yes! You are!”

“Thank you! With all love and affection, I wish to invite Eric, a graduating student to come on stage right here!” she said with smiles flashing all over her face.

Eric’s heart was now thumping faster and louder. Tyler could feel his friend’s nervousness, so he stood up and pulled Eric up. But wait, is Eric dreaming? Dance on stage with Katherine? The noise of the students cheering Eric out of his seat could not allow him reasoned out all the answers.

Josephine was taken aback at the mention of Eric’s name. Could this be the end game? Eric is a guy she had loved right from the first day she had met him in the library. But today, all dream, all thought of spending some moments in Eric arms ends. It is the opposite that’s happening. Josephine could not hold back her tears as it freely flows watching both Katherine and Eric in each other’s arm dancing to the mood music of the DJ

Eric tried as much to avoid Josephine gaze as he held Katherine but Josephine eyes was filled with tears—something that made it impossible for Eric to take away his eyes. Eric couldn’t help but to follow suit. Though, he had rejected Josephine time without number, she has gone to prove herself not only attractive but diligent, knowledgeable and decent even with her buxom figure. But he finds comfort with Katherine, something that’s not there with Josephine.

Just then, something unusual happened. Josephine stood up, wiping off her tears, she began to clap loudly. All surprised, they all joined in the clapping. Soon, the hall was filled with clapping. This brought the dance to an end but Eric could not stop wondering why Josephine did what she did. In anyway, he must find her and ask but before then, Tyler must set the stage in tears as he was called for his presentation as the Master BFHS. Tyler stood up from his seat as he was cheered to the stage. At first, he was nervous, not knowing what to say or do but simply a word came to him and he speaks out.

“Whenit’s over, we are just beginning!”

Nobody knew the meaning of what he said but later it was understand by few close to him. Eric and Vanessa grabbed the message quickly as Tyler asked the DJ to turn on Westlife’s ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ of which he maimed perfectly with passionate voice pouring out the music. Tears streams from Tyler’s eyes as he grip the mic expressing the inexpressible through Westlife’s song.

The hall was filled with emotion as all the audience were moved and some even shed tears for their Master BFHS. Vanessa was feeling uneasy as she watches Tyler, her once most loved guy pouring out his emotions on stage. What else can she do than to join him in shedding tears even in Glen’s arm.

  … Can’t believe it’s over

  …Should have site the dangers

And the warning right there in front of me

  Just stop

  Let’s start it all over

Could not get one more try

  Maybe tomorrow

  You say that you’re mine

  You realised—I can change

  Am gonna show you

  A beautiful life

  I’d get you back someday

  Maybe tomorrow…

Tyler stepped down from the stage. He knew he had lost it. The love he was afraid of losing, the girl he had wanted to change, but he made the wrong decision by following Eric’s advice at the expense of his own very thought. But then, Eric is his best friend. His advice in the past has helped him to get off some knotty issue but this one… This one he doesn’t understood what went wrong. Was Vanessa really not the right girl for him or was he making a mistake? Whichever one, it’s over and it’s over! This one issue won’t depress him again. No, not after he had stepped out of the hall, out of the prom, out of BFHS, out of high school and out of love? Definitely no! He’s going to find another better girl than Vanessa. He took solace in this as he flashed back a big grin. The once pale face now a bright one as he waved back as an appreciation to the audience chanting his praises.

Taking back his seat beside Eric—

“Do you care to have a toast?” Tyler asked smiling.

Is Eric hearing well or is not the depressed Tyler he had knew right from the beginning of the prom night? Perhaps, the presentation has helped him get off the load from his chest! So, must he compromise the joy of his friend with the reluctance to stand up? No, not this time around.

  “Why not?”

“Then get off your backside and let’s go to the bar” Tyler said standing up. Eric followed suit.

Katherine joined them as they made their way through the audience now leaving the concert hall for the bar.

  “Eric?” Josephine called from behind.

“Yeah?” Eric answered and turning back to see who the person was.

  “Oh Jose!” Eric exclaimed

“What’s up?” Josephine asked beaming with smile.

“I’m cool and you. And thanks for the inspiring clap.” Eric said looking naïve—though he wasn’t!

“Oh that!” she said and laughed. All of them laughed also.

  “Ehm… Jose?” Eric called out.

  “Yes?” turning back.

  “I… I just… want…”

  Josephine cuts him short.

“It’s okay Eric. I understand if you don’t want to talk. But you’re always a friend and Kath; nice performance. I give you the entire prop!” she said beaming with smile as she walke
d away more gallantly.

As they chat incessantly at the bar, Tyler remembered Vanessa’s opening speech—“…hoping that all of us would find answers to the question that puzzle our heart which lead us to tonight’s prom and satisfactions in those answers…”

As for Tyler he had found the question to his answer and not just that, he had found satisfaction. The question was “is Vanessa the right girl for him?” And the answer that Tyler has always held on to was “but I love her!” But tonight, he had opened his hand and the answer has flown off from his heart and hand; never to come back again. But wait what if Vanessa comes back for him? I guess that would be another story…
