    Julia The Apostate

     Julia The Apostate

"You don't think it's too young for me, girls?" "Young for you—par exemple! I should say not," her niece replied, perking the quivering aigrette still more obliquely upon her aunt's head. Carolyn used par exemple as a good cook uses onion—a hint of it in everything. There were those who said that she interpolated it in the Litany; but Carolyn, who was born Caroline and a Baptist, was too much impressed by the liturgy of what she called The Church to insert even an uncanonized comma.

    The Bond of Black

      William Le Queux
     The Bond of Black

In this story I have dealt with an extraordinary phase of modern life in London, which to the majority will come as a startling revelation. Some will, perhaps, declare that no such amazing state of things exists in this, the most enlightened age the world has known. To such, I can only assert that in this decadent civilisation of ours the things which I have described actually take place in secret, as certain facts in my possession indisputably show.

    The Boy with Wings

      Berta Ruck
     The Boy with Wings

Hendon! An exquisite May afternoon, still and sunny. Above, a canopy of unflecked sapphire-blue. Below, the broad khaki-green expanse of the flying-ground, whence the tall, red-white-and-blue pylons pointed giant fingers to the sky. Against the iron railings of the ground the border of chairs was thronged with spectators; women and girls in summery frocks, men in light overcoats with field-glasses slung by a strap about them. The movement of this crowd was that of a breeze in a drift of coloured petals; the talk and laughter rose and fell as people looked about at the great sheds with their huge lettered names, at the big stand, at the parked-up motors behind the seats; at the men in uniform carrying their brass instruments slowly across to the bandstand on the left. At intervals everybody said to everybody else: "Isn't this just a perfect afternoon for the flying?"

    Mother: A Story

      Kathleen Thompson Norris
     Mother: A Story

Mother is a romance by Kathleen Norris, one of the most successful women writers of the first decades of the 20th century. The story was published in 1911 and it was the first out of the 75 novels by the author. It brought Norris instant success and established her as a novelist so popular that President Theodore Roosevelt visited the author personally to congratulate her.The story is set in a small town a few hours' distance from New York. The Mother in the title is Mrs. Paget, a woman devoted to her husband and her seven children, willing to undertake hardships and never ceasing to sacrifice her own good for her loved ones, but most of the story is about her beautiful daughter, Margaret. The girl is charming and wishes to live a life of richness and luxury, but is forced to stay with her family, teaching at the local school. A strange incident introduces her to a rich lady from New York, Mrs. Carr-Boldt, who is charmed by the young girl and invites her to the city to become her secretary. Margaret accepts the job offer and moves to Mrs. Carr-Boldt's luxurious home. The two ladies go abroad where Margaret meets Dr. Tenison, a charming young gentleman and they fall in love with each other. They are forced to part, then they become reunited in Margaret's home town.At the end of the novel, Tenison meets Margaret's mother, too and he tells the girl that he recognizes in her the qualities she inherited from her mother and these are in fact the qualities that he finds most charming about Margaret. It is these qualities what makes Margaret's character so exemplary and what makes the novel resonate with today's readers, too - the appreciation of love over riches, of depth over shallowness and of family values over mundane life.
